  • Trip to the "Gilt Dragon" 1656 shipwreck survivors site, and surrounds

I have an interest in history of all types, and the WA coast has its fair share, in the form of ship wrecks. Many of these visited Australia 100s of years before the English turned up. Dutch sailors were marooned or survived shipwrecks to scramble ashore. There are many theories to what happened after that, died, absorbed into the aboriginal population, made boats and sailed on to name a few.

The Gilt Dragon has all this, plus then a whole lot more once people discovered her, and plundered her silver.. There is enough stories about this era to fill many books. The way this ship was plundered changed the way shipwrecks were handled.

Anyway, I went and visited the Gilt Dragons survivor camp in a cave on the coast. It was an interesting and enjoyable trip. I recommend anyone with an interest in this type of thing Google "Gilt Dragon" and a guy called "Allan Robinson" and have a read..

If you want to camp in this area, I did come back covered in tick bites, so be warned.. they do seem to be a lot around the coast near Perth.
