  • TRIP REPORT - North Stradbroke Island (Winter Holiday)

We recently spent a relaxing week beach camping on North Stradbroke Island. We've been regular visitors to Straddie for many years (thanks to friends who own a house at Point Lookout), but we recently decided we should see what Straddie holds in terms of a camping experience. We camped on Flinders beach approximately 1.5km's from Adder Rock.

Waiting for the Barge. To maximize our time over there we booked on the 7am from Cleveland which meant a 4am start.

    Our Chariot Arrives.

The excitement was too much for our Chocolate Labrador.

Having been on the beach for less than 20 minutes we had the opportunity to finally try out our Maxtrax without the inconvenience of actually getting bogged ourselves.

All set up. We wanted to take enough firewood for the entire week but didn't want it to take up too much space (we took everything including the kitchen sink) so we picked up some 2nd hand Untreated Hardwood Sleepers off Ebay and the Drop saw did the rest.

Our home away from home. Although we were there during the first week of school holidays, the nearest camp to ours was literally hundreds of metres away.

Our first sunset of the trip.

Although it wasn't anywhere near as cold as we feared it may be, having a nice campfire each night was a nice luxury.

I'm not normally the type to be up at sunrise but when it's as beautiful as this even I'm prepared to drag myself out of bed.

    The new toy.

Lunch by a tidal pool on the beach.

The sunrises were good, the sunsets were even better.

In an ironic ending. Our barge trip back took 2.5 hours (rather than 45 minutes).... The low tide was VERY low and one of the other barges ran aground in the channel near cleveland. We weren't able to get around it, so we sat there until the tide came in enough for it to get moving again.

Nice looking setup there Geoffy! Also looking forward to getting our VX 150 on the beach ASAP!

How did it go towing the camper on the sand? After our Gordon Country trip I added some polyairs to lift it up in the bum again, as soon I as added the camper and fridge it sat it down.

Some good photos there as well!

      Cheers Daniel

It was brilliant on the sand. Our camper is just under 1000kgs fully laden so it's not a huge load, but I was pleasantly surprised at how confidently it handled the beach. We dropped the VXs tyres down to 22psi but didn't touch the tyres on the Camper. It handled things so well we pumped the VX tyres back up to road pressure while we were packing up (ie. before we left the beach) although to be fair by this time we'd used up 70 litres of water, had nothing left in our 2 eskies, and had 100kgs less weight thanks to having used a weeks worth of firewood.

          Hey Geoffy

Shhh don't tell too many people!! We've had an old permanant van at Adder Rock for over ten years, we love to get over there April or September outside of school holiday's you will think you are on a desert island.

Maybe a Pradopoint weekend on Flinders is the go.

What a relaxing looking week!! Wish it was me there
Adder Rock is our favourite haunt as well... although, the last two times there we've used a house at Point Lookout that's in the extended family
Great photo's and that for sharing the trip

Love the report and Straddie, I travel to the Island every day

But if you want it to remain as it is now I suggest action is needed.

                  Hi Guys
We always camped at Flinders or Cylinder but then started to camp towards the bottom of Main Beach. There are some great spots just behind the dunes and you don't see anyone, just great!!! Isolated and good worming and fishing. You do have to take everything with you though.

                        Matt,

It's bitumen all over the "civilised" part of the island. There are 4 or 5 beach entries depending on where you want to go to.

Try this for a bit more info:
