  • Melbourne to Perth

Hi Guy's well it's not long till we get our car over here in Perth . We plan on flying over to Melbourne late October visit some family and friends, bolt on a few more modifications to the Prado ( bonnet scoop, 3in Taipan exhaust , Pyro gauge, Turbo timer, Boost gauge, Diff Breathers) for it's 3500km to Perth. We Hope to leave around the 1st of November and take about a week to drive over is this realistic. We plan to stick to the HWY as this is more of a relocation trip than an actual touring site seeing trip. So if anyone out there has any info on places to see on the way over and places where we can roll out the swag for the night will be greatly appreciated. Can't wait to be reunited with the Prado again it has been 6 months since I have driven it  I Hope she remembers who I am
    Cheers Adam

    Adam,

Have down the trip both ways manytimes. Looks like I maybe doing it again after Christmas.

One place I always stop at is Koonalda. It's an old sheep station that used to be a fuel stop on the old highway. It's about 20km's directly off the current highway between Nullabor Roadhouse and Eucla along a track. I generally drive along the old highway which can be accessed at both the border and Nullabor Roadhouse. Simple drive along the old highway - now just a track.

The old homestead at Koonalda has been restored. You can stay in there but we always stay in the old shearers quarters. Also restored. All free.

Plenty to see - old car wrecks, Koonalda Cave about 20 further up the track, a blowhole.

Another place to camp is Pildappa rock, Like a mini Ularu, About 15K's out of Minnipa (spelling?) SA. on the main highway 1 about 1/2 way between Port augusta and ceduna. But if you headed down to see port lincoln you would miss it.

      Free and interesting.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.
