  • Towing a jayco Expanda onto Fraser Island

    Hi

Just after some wise sage advise.

Am looking to go to fraser Island January 2012.
I have a jayco expanda 16ft that I have underslung the axle and put 15" wheels and dunlop AT tyres on. Tow truck is my pride and joy Prado 150 petrol.

Can I get onto fraser and tow to the caravan park to stay there or am I completely kidding myself?

Any advise would be appreciated. I am not an amatuer with regard to 4wding but anybody that doesnt seek advise for this sort of trip is a fool in my book.

where r you going to on the island, cathedral beach, eurong or waddy point, i have seen people towing 20foot boats on dual axle trailers with landcruisers 80s, 100 nissan navaras, but when it comes to getting indian head you will need at least some maxtrax , plenty of right foot or another vehicle to give you a hand if you get stuck, gets very soft around indian head, main thing is tyre pressures, but im sure you are all over that 1. cheers samo

      Hi Jason,
If you take all the usual precautions and take it easy, you won't have a problem. As Samo has said, there are huge boats (and vans) being towed up there all the time. You've set the van up perfectly so don't stress too much  just get out there and enjoy it

        Thanks wise sages

I just had a set of BF Goodrich AT fitted to the Peeraado and they are great.

The advice I am getting says get on at Rainbow and head up to the park which is the Big 4 Frasers at Cathederal beach.

I am guessing that I would enter the beach near the ferry landing drive up the beach and enter into the park from there.

Do you all recommend getting recovery points fitted at the front and rear and I am going to get an underbody rust prevention spray

          Hey Goody

i havent towed over to fraser but go to inskip point where the barge is every year and just so you are aware the sand is very soft going up to the barge. But with the usual things like tyres pressure down and right foot down you should be fine but just be wary it can be tricky when tourists eg. backpackers hiring cars get stuck on the track in there, it happens all the time as its there first time on the sand if possible send someone else first and get them to call you through.

Unless i am arse about rainbow is the go cause if you get off at the other side you will have to cross the soft tracks in the middle of the island another popular mod up there is a 3rd trailer wheel with stub bolted to the front of the draw bar then if you get stuck you can drop the van get the car to the hard stuff and then tow the van through with a snatch strap or winch it to you etc. A u shape skid welded to the bottom front of the draw bar may also suffice
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further
