  • Fraser Island Oct 2010 Trip - All packed up!

We are off to Fraser Island in just over a month (last weekend of October) and I am planning to take our camper trailer for the first time, can anyone recommend a good camper trailer spot (or 2) that they have found along the eastern beach side?

I have camped there many times in a tent and swag but it has been around 6 years since I was last there, I am sure I will have no issues finding a good site but if anyone could share a GPS coordinate and or photo it would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Daniel

Daniel, I have a couple of trip reports on fraser, check out my posts then we can chat. We stayed at Cathedral when we camped, fairly central and good facilities.

Hi Daniel, I agree with Hutch. Cathedral has plenty of room and a good outdoor kitchen too. A great spot to base yourself to explore the island. Simon.

Thanks Hutch, Simon, I have been to Cathedral a couple of times (not stayed, my best mates employer owns it) but our camper is fully self contained so after something a little more private. I think I will just have to suck it and see when we get over there and have a good explore along the beach before we setup.

Sorry I missed you call today Rob, will give you a call tomorrow, today sucked the big one!

        Cheers Daniel

          Hi Daniel

Share a funny story, we went to Fraser with another family to set up for a month self sufficient. Drove up the beach until we found a spot with a small spring running to the beach. Nobody else for 500mts plus either side, yes what a great spot. Well in between tour operators stoping for lunch/morning/afternoon tea to point out that camping on Fraser is just like this, we got sandblasted by Helicopters landing 100mts from us with overseas tourists doing the same.

Our stays at Cathedral Beach were much more relaxed, I trust you have better luck than we did at the private experience.

          Regards, Richo.

With that bit of advice it is worth thinking about Richo, plus I will get it at a good rate so I will pass it by the wife. It has been 6 to 7 years since I have camped at Fraser and the first time with the camper in tow.

I think I saw you on the freeway yesterday afternoon around 5.30pm heading between Miles Platting Rd Exit and the Mt Gravatt Capalaba Rd Exit?

Re: Fraser Island Oct 2010 Trip - All packed up!

You will love it I spent last week up there at Waddy Point fishing with the guys from work.
This was the fifth year in a row and can't wait to go back.
The tailor were not on the bite with the bad weather but we still managed a good feed of whiting and dart.
It was a shame to see all the dead sea birds after that bad weather system went through.
The whole eastern coast was littered with thousands of dead birds poor things, as you will see as you go up Daniel.
It will keep the dingos well fed anyway, there were a few around.

Here is a picture of 3 together at Orchid beach entrance.

Re: Fraser Island Oct 2010 Trip - All packed up!

Thanks Ron, not wrong about the poor birds... Thousands of them! Cannot wait to go back however next time it is 'Hire a House' I have a week of cleaning the camper now... It was worth it.

We found a great spot about 5km past Cathedral Beach Big4. In hindsight we should have camped there but oh well, the wind was not that bad of the afternoon. Had a great time, the weather was fantastic. Only caught one fish, A dart, better then nothing (you have to put the line in the water for longer then half an hour as well, to much other stuff to do...)

Thought I would share some pics.

The Prado and Camper just off the barge, still nice a clean...

Out Camp site, all set up. Nice spot, well hidden but easy to find. Could have been a little flatter but...

                        The Champagne Pools

                        Eli Creek

                        The Maheno Wreck

I found a turtle on the beach, not doing so well so I helped him back in the water and then found a Ranger and reported it.

Found another well setup 150 at Eli Creek

                        Stonetool Sandblow

Beats the normal Qld M3 anyday of the week!

Eli Creek at High Tide, no thanks we will wait it out!

I think Toyota need to replace the little screen with this one (this is how we killed time waiting for the tide to go down at Eli Creek.

                        Mucking around...

Dingo, most likely heading back to our site to have another go at getting to our food (with no luck mind you).

Tim Tam and Coke at Lake Allom

One of the many turtles at Lake Allom.

Testing out the 240 Wat HID 50 Watt Lightforce just down from our campsite, incredible...

We travelled about 500km all over the island. indian head crossing was a breeze, quite a few got stuck but. Given the chance again I would stay at Orchid Beach. Incredible spot.

We made it over to Kingfisher for lunch one day (and a free one at that, that is another story). Not a bad spot either. We had stayed there before years ago but the service seems to have improved. The inland track in and out but, geez that would test the hire car day trippers out.

Looking forward to our next trip now, not looking forward to cleaning out camper but...

                        Cheers Daniel
