Re: SA PP'ers BBQ - Goolwa Beach Sat 20th Nov

Went for drive on Goolwa beach on Monday. Good to see water (and tons of boats at the Lake side of the mouth). Only one seal spotted this time. Plenty of vehicles stuck along the way. After breezing through areas others had trouble I (stupidly) decided to do a U-turn to go back and assist mate helping someone else. I had to catch up with another mate to grab a radio before turning around. Became bogged. Not a big issue but am struggling to come to terms with mate snatching me out in his Paj. Up to that point he was very close to trading up to the Prado. I noticed a lot of undercarriage protection left on the beach. Still, all told the recovery points worked and everyone had a good time.

On another note went for drive down the Boat Harbour Beach track. This lies towards Victor Harbour off Range road from Deep Creek. We tried a few other routes on the map that were sign posted as 'private property'. Spoke to some locals about it and they seemed to think continuing would be ok except motorbikes struggle to climb one of the hills. Maybe another day.

Returning to Adelaide on the monday found some nice dirt tracks to travel (will post GPS details). Not really 4WD, but after rain there is a water crossing. I'd also suggest the road becomes interesting in the wet, and certainly narrows to a single lane at points.

    Great weather on the weekend.

Griffonaus - post up these roads mate ;-)

I was surprised on Goolwa beach too. I reckon I saw 4 plastic sump guards. The sand really isn't that deep so I'm guessing they came from soft roaders?

All the sump giuards where there on Friday. I think they had been floating out in the southern ocean and blown in with the storm. It sent millions of those little sea furry balls up as well! The kids loved them! Still picking them out fo the car!

Its the old story with that beach, so many gop thru with hi tire pressures and chew it out, if you keep your momentum up, your fine, as soon as you stop or try a turn in the wrong place, down you go. Even using 2nd start dug me in a couple times.

I hate getting bogged, but must say I really enjoyed the digging and experience gained from getting out of a situation, better to be practised when it happens for real! I was winchless too that day, so had to do it manually as my winch solenoid has shit the bed... Something to fix this month!

20th of November is good for me, so I'll be there! I might try and pick up a compressor and install it under the hood before then. Otherwise, I'm fairly lacking in the recovery gear (and experience) so if everyone's willing to help us along and offer whatever advise required, then we'll see you there!

Curious: As to the exact location we will be meeting at? And what what essentials I should bring along?

Matt, the location for the meet will be the car park at the end of Beach Road. There is an access point from here down onto the beach:
              http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en...,0.020556&z=16
By the sounds of it the essentials would be recovery points, snatch strap (and bridle) plus enough shackles. A long handled shovel wouldn't go astray either.

If you get yourself a compressor then also get a decent tyre gauge and some sort of deflator such as the ARB Ezy Deflator or a set of Stauns.

I will have my Maxtrax on board which i am happy to lend if anyone gets stuck, i reckon most people will have a selection of snatch straps etc if you don't have any, but recovery points on the front would be a nescesity for a forward snatch recovery. if you have a towbar that will suffice for a rear snatch recovery.

It was suggested that i can tow my CT along this section, so hopefully those going solo shouldn't have to many dramas with the correct tyre pressures!

Carrying a compressor is not necessary as the Caltex at Cadell and Moore Sts have an air pump.

Air pump is where the Camry is in this Google map image. It's a short drive from Goolwa Beach, so take it nice and slow. I couldn't find any other petrol stations there with an air pump.

The BP is only 200mtrs from the Beach Rd now, they used to have air, should still have.

I am down again today, will check the beach out to see how it fared after last weekends softness.

Couldn't find any the last time. Maybe they keep it stored away unless you are a paying customer.

Re: SA PP'ers BBQ - Goolwa Beach Sat 20th Nov

Andrew - I noticed last Monday that the tide was higher than I am used to down there (I don't go there a lot). At the peak, there was enough room for a vehicle to reverse right up against the dune, with about 3 or 4 meters in front of that for vehicle to pass before the waters edge. The peak for that afternoon was .96 meters. If you go down on the Friday night, you will be contending with a high tide of 1.11 metres at about 1 am. This has the potential to wash right up to the dunes, or at least close to, especially if there is a S/SE breeze or any evidence of swell. There is usually a 'little' more room up around the month, but this is probably up there with the higher tides that Goolwa sees.

TeamPiggy is obviously there more than me, so he may be able to clarify the chance of you being washed out at 1am in the morning. Just though i'd give you a heads up as wouldn't want to see this happen.

There are a couple of clearings in the dunes, but I would expect it could be difficult to get a CT in there. Maybe Team Piggy can do a reconnaissance mission for you to let you know (and me, as I wouldn't mind camping somewhere like this one weekend).

                        Marks for clearings are
                        -35.530139°
                        138.801372°

Drop this into Google Earth and you'll see a few more.

                        Cheers
                        Ian.

                          Hi All,

Missed this notice earlier and havent received my leave pass yet, but count me it!
Looking forward to another PP catch-up.
Andrew - I know you're double locked but it may be you needing the maxtrax if the beach is nice is nice and soft - ive seen your CT buildup and it looks solid (heavy)!!

                          Cheers

Thanks Ian, we will probably go down Saturday morning as we wouldn't get to Goolwa until after dark on the Friday after work, meet up with everyone, camp the night and probably visit the inlaws on Sunday. We can suss out the conditions then and if its no good we can always check into a caravan park or the inlaws front lawn at Victor if we have to  looking forward to catching up with you in Pinnaroo in a few weeks.

Micheal, my CT when fully loaded with 140lts of water, 20 litres of fuel and stuffed to the brim with food and drink supplies for our recent 8 week trip to Cape York it weighed 1100kg exactly when we left. For an overnighter like this when we could expect soft sand etc i would take the minimum supplies and water so it would probably be around 850-900kg mark. I will definately have the Maxtrax on board and if we need to use them that could just make it more fun

Big Trev, i cant speak for anyone else but i am usually on channel 10.

                              Cheers Andrew

Beach wasnt too bad yesterday, tide has cleaned up all the softness.

Yes I have had the tide at the last 4 kms up against the dunes almost a cpl times. But its pretty rare.

I wouldnt think you will have too much trouble with your CT, I have seen plenty down there before.. Be smart and drop your tires a bit first, then just keep momentum..

At the mouth there is about 10 acres of area to camp in happily. None of it under any danger from the tide anymore, you will see easily where the tideline is.. There is also a number of "washouts" along the beach that a lot of people reverse their CT's into and stay the night. I wouldnt go for them myself.

Be aware the dredge pump can run 24/7 and is noisy, so sometimes picking one of the areas away from it is smarter.
