  • Vic Hi Country

    G'day
We went on a tagalong tour and covered a lot of the big tracks and lots of river crossings on the Crooked River Track . Going down one of the super steep tracks I hit a rock and bent the passenger side step on the 120 Prado . We did around 19 crossings then had to turn around as the river was up and the entry was a big drop down .
This meant going back up the insanely steep track where we got a punctured side wall in the standard Grandtrek passenger side rear . This was changed and we continued on the climb out of the valley but you wouldn't believe....another punctured side wall again in the passenger side rear , bugger ! We were not far from the heli pad so the group camped down there and we camped beside the car . In the morning the tour leader took me and 2 wheels down to Bairnsdale where we lobbed into a tyre dealer . He dealt in truck and tractor tyres mostly so didn't have much for 4WD's . We were about to go when his fitter came in and told us that he had 2 x s/hand Grandtreks in good nick . Great , bung them on and that gave me breathing space so I could get tyres back in Sydney .
This leaves me to wonder which way to jump , BFG's or Coopers . I've noticed that BFG's are available in 275 x 65 x 17 or in 265 x 70 x 17 . Both of them seem to be the same outside diameter but the dealer reckons that the 275s are more popular .
What do you guys reckon ?
I managed to pull the step off and straighten it up by using a bottle jack to push it back into shape .
I also pulled the fuel tank bash plate off , the one under the passenger side rear seat , as it was dinged up . I bashed the dings out but had a lot of hassles trying to get it to fit back on as I had changed the shape of it with the hammer . It took several goes of re shaping before it would fit back on . I reckon it would've been better to use a slide hammer to pull it back down with the bash plate still in place .
I'd recommend the Vic High Country for spectacular views and challenging tracks and river crossings .

    Cheers
    Ross

Maybe you need a set of rock sliders :!: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=10333

Hope to be heading to the Vic high country early next year, looking forward to it. Any pictures of your trip, always like to see pictures.

    Cheers Andrew

265 x 70 x 17 are 2 cm higher compared to other one, so you'll get a better clearence, and stay away from Coopers...

Which company did the tagalong tour? Personally would not go into High Country on Crapteks...

depends on your need, but I am on my second set of Cooper STT's - first set on previous car.
I've done tassie, eyre peninsula, central oz, high country and surrounds all on the Coopers and never had a puncture or any issues with the quality.
Noise is very acceptable on the rd, although they are my going away tyres, not everyday tyres.
Running the correct pressures depending the terrain always helps.
Can't fault the Coopers in STT form.
Although the new BFG muds look pretty cool.
        I run 265/70/17.
        Cheers

Yeah, the Vic High Country tracks are a bit of a challenge for a standard Prado with standard tyres. You will have probably bottomed out on the drainage humps they put in to stop the tracks washing away ( "humpty doos") - DSE and Parks love putting those things in. A 2" lift helps.
I took my side steps off after the first bit of damage, plus I knocked my shin on them all the time - yeah everyone says the sills will get damaged instead- but so far haven't done any damage to the sills and done some pretty serious tracks. I like it a lot better without the "wings" on. At least my trouser cuffs keep clean now.
          Cheers, Wayne

Guys thanks for the replies , very good .

Darren Ok on the Coopers , I'm tending towards BFG's but am keeping my options open .

Wayne , yes a lift would've helped as I did bottom out on the washouts but as this is my daily driver which I use for work I need to get into city underground car parks . I only just squeeze into some of them so a lift and roof rack is out of the question . Everyone's telling me that the Grandtreks are crap but I still seem to be able to go where the other guys with BFG Coopers etc are going . Sure they're not LT construction but they still get me there , this is the first failure that I've had in 62000k'S .Last year we went to Corner Country no worries . I will replace them with an LT tyre when they wear out but that'll take a while as they wear very well .

LC120 the trip was with Aust 4x4 Adventures , John Cantrell is the guy running it , he also does 4x4 training courses .

Andrew yes I am considering rock sliders .The step has straightened up ok , I suppose I should get my finger out and post how I did it .

The Crooked River track has 22 river crossings but be careful of the depth near the Talbotville end .

            Cheers Ross

              Re: Vic Hi Country

You should be OK with a 2" lift in most underground carparks- they're generally have a height limit of 2.1 metres or worst 2.0 metres - mine with 2" lift and standard tyres fits in OK I've never had an issue. ( although it feels a little scary sometimes )
              Cheers, Wayne

I did Tom Groggin to Mt Pinnibar on the Grandtrecks but it was absolute perfect weather and track conditions were optimal.

Wayne it's interesting to know that you can still fit into the 2m carparks , yes it would be a bit scarey !

Funghi2003 I reckon it'd be ok on Grandteks in the dry , but in the mud....I think we'd be up s...t creek mate !

                  Cheers

If its wet do not even think of driving up with MT's, lockers etc. No amount of gear can help you out in wet conditions. There is a reason why its a "Dry weather track only" area, many people have perished from tackling the tracks in the wet.
