G'day
We went on a tagalong tour and covered a lot of the big tracks and lots of river crossings on the Crooked River Track . Going down one of the super steep tracks I hit a rock and bent the passenger side step on the 120 Prado . We did around 19 crossings then had to turn around as the river was up and the entry was a big drop down .
This meant going back up the insanely steep track where we got a punctured side wall in the standard Grandtrek passenger side rear . This was changed and we continued on the climb out of the valley but you wouldn't believe....another punctured side wall again in the passenger side rear , bugger ! We were not far from the heli pad so the group camped down there and we camped beside the car . In the morning the tour leader took me and 2 wheels down to Bairnsdale where we lobbed into a tyre dealer . He dealt in truck and tractor tyres mostly so didn't have much for 4WD's . We were about to go when his fitter came in and told us that he had 2 x s/hand Grandtreks in good nick . Great , bung them on and that gave me breathing space so I could get tyres back in Sydney .
This leaves me to wonder which way to jump , BFG's or Coopers . I've noticed that BFG's are available in 275 x 65 x 17 or in 265 x 70 x 17 . Both of them seem to be the same outside diameter but the dealer reckons that the 275s are more popular .
What do you guys reckon ?
I managed to pull the step off and straighten it up by using a bottle jack to push it back into shape .
I also pulled the fuel tank bash plate off , the one under the passenger side rear seat , as it was dinged up . I bashed the dings out but had a lot of hassles trying to get it to fit back on as I had changed the shape of it with the hammer . It took several goes of re shaping before it would fit back on . I reckon it would've been better to use a slide hammer to pull it back down with the bash plate still in place .
I'd recommend the Vic High Country for spectacular views and challenging tracks and river crossings .
Cheers
Ross
