Here is the creek bed that Glen is referring to. My wife took these photos of my mate's 90 series from our car . His wife is driving and she was literally in tears at the start of this section. The TLCC instructors guided everyone through with no loss of paint. :P One particular gnarly rock section passes within inches of your mirrors and is higher than top of vehicle.

Had some more friends join the TLCC so headed down to Willowglen again last weekend to do a Tag-A-Long on the driver training. Gave me a chance to test out the new tyres . . . what a difference some muddies make!

Here's a few photos of the Prado losing contact with terra firma:

and my favourite that is now my new desktop

(the wife has suggested that we get air lockers so we don't have to drive it so hard up the hills)

              Cheers - Byrnsie

Yes it was a great weekend! Although it was raining all day we drove... Good driving - Wife was a little scared at times!... May also be able to get rear lockers to make it a smoother ride for her

A number of Prado's were present and all made it thru fine!

                        Re: 4WD Training Courses

Just digging up an oldish thread
Pretty convincing post from xvprado re TLCC
                        lol at Byrnsie's wifes quotes.

OK, has anyone got any feedback regarding driver training with Vic Widman's Great Divide Tours for the beginners course. I am going to call them tomorrow (if not closed due to xmas) to make some enquiries.

Did anyone else end up joining TLCC after xvprado's post and if so what are your thoughts. Byrnsie and borgy are you still involved.

                          Re: 4WD Training Courses

I have done many trips with Vic, (he is a neighbour) He has great staff, very knowledgable people, and has I believe one of the best private 4WD training facilities in Australia. You won't go wrong. I am going to try and squeeze in a weekend advanced course with him this year.

                            Re: 4WD Training Courses

My wife and I have done the TLCC course and two of Vic Widman's courses. The TLCC has the benefit that you thereafter have use of their fine properties and join a group of similar minded folk who can join you on trips and from whom you can learn more. The courses are both good. But they have different slants. Both courses teach 4WD mechanical principles and recovery techniques.

The TLCC course is best at showing what you and your vehicle are capable of, as you are given quite challenging tracks to drive. But you are shielded from your lack of knowledge by the splendid volunteers who guide you along the tracks (mostly) scratch free. The recovery course is hands on. After it I was confident my Prado could take me along difficult looking tracks but I would worry that my personal wheel placement skills were still undeveloped enough to put scars on the paint.

Vic's course, professionally presented by Vic and his drivers who take out his tagalong tours, starts off practicing the principles of wheel placement, hill starts and stalls before putting it together on driving tracks of increasing difficulty. The tracks used for Vic's beginners course are not as challenging as the Willowglen tracks. He does include sand driving. And the recovery practical was mostly demonstration by the teachers, except when our Prado/Ultimate combo got bogged in the sand and got snatched out. ops: But you cant expect too much from two or three days of a course. The courses will show you what you ought to know to keep out of trouble and what to do when you get into it anyway. So they will make you safer and more cautious. But they don't replace the experience of spending time driving off road and setting yourself challenges. Of course you are advised to do that in the company of more experienced 4WDrivers and that's where either joining commercial tagalong trips or the TLCC can continue to help you.
