    Mansfield Surrounds Dec 10

Well I thought I should do a report of our recent trip to Mansfield and some of the places we visited.

I will do it in three sections…

    Part 1 – Mt Samaria

We set off on 27th Nov in light drizzle. This was the week when the floods were in their formative stages, so wet was the theme.

We took the Mansfield to Whitfield road out of Mansfield and turned off into Blue range road. The intention was to explore the Blue Range creek, but the road was closed for forestry, so we headed up the blue Range instead. The rain stopped, so we took a walk to Back Creek Falls

It was a very pleasant track, with kangaroos bouncing off into the bush (too quick to photograph them)

When we got to the falls it started raining again, but they were well worth the walk.

We continued on across the range and down when the fog came in. We also spotted a couple of Kangaroos and a Wombat.

Then the fun started. We went through the forestry area to the Kelly tree picnic area. It’s a great spot, but found relying on the navigator was a mistake and we found ourselves on a clay track losing traction fast. Rounding one corner at about 15-20km/Hr we just slid into the bank and could not get out of the drain. A but like the Murray River experience on another thread. The tyres (Cooper ST) had 2 cm mud caked over the treads and it was like an ice skating rink. We were slowly heading for a hole that could have made it even worse.

Then I remembered I had just acquired some Maxtrax so out they came. I just laid them in series in front of the drivers’ front wheel and cleared the problem easily – well worth the investment. It certainly wasn’t going to come out any other way. (Sadly swmbo wasn’t going to get wet taking a video of the retrieval). After that I understood why there is a need for a bag or something to cover the mud that stuck like poo to the Maxtrax. So here is the only evidence –

Part 2 – Lake Eildon National Park

Well, overnight we had a bucket load of rain which raised Lake Eildon about 1.2 Metres. My son joined us for the next part of the trip.

We decided to do a run through Lake Eildon National Park, but ended up going to Goughs Bay and then into the Delatite Plantation State Forrest. Driving around the lake we came across this fellow

We found a powerline track so we had to have a go. The modded Patrol doing a bit of a flex.

The stock Prado didn’t quite compare

    But still held its own

Once up the top, we carried on the Highett Point Track

We then headed down the Stillman track.

It was great, till we met this block.

So we decided to have lunch and a rest

We then headed back up the hill

    Through some nice country

    Then came the descent

With a few of those invisible exits

Then we did a quick check on where we were

The Prado was great on the descents. Just put it in low range and let the engine do the braking. Select 1, 2 or 3 to adjust the speed as desired.

The day ended with a great sunset shot over the lake.

    To be continued…

Part 3 – Howqua, Mt MacDonald Area

After being told all the tracks in the Buller Area were pretty much closed we decided to do the Howqua, Mt MacDonald area instead.

We took the Howqua track to Sheepyard Flat. And checked out Fry’s hut. It’s a quaint little hut that was occupied up to the 70’s

Sadly the Hills track was closed due to washouts, so headed back on Brocks Rd. We stopped at Noonans Hut and checked out the state of the tracks with some friendly rangers, who agreed or chosen route would be fine, (but a little “unkept”)

We took the Refrigerator Gap track, just as the rain started again. And stopped to air down.

Half way down we had to get out the axe to clear a fallen tree. Then headed down to have lunch at Jamieson Hut. Problem was that the Jamieson river was swollen and we woosed out after wading it. The current was swift, and the map said “high water ford can be difficult”, so discretion was the better part of valour.

A group of walkers came by and were determined to cross, It was about 8 degrees, and they stripped off for the crossing

After Lunch we headed up Low Saddle Road

to the MacDonald Track. It was teaming with rain and there was a river coming down the track (6” deep). After the first river crossing we were stopped by a large tree, gone to sleep over the track, so we turned around and joined the Son of Bitch Spur Track.

This was unkept as previously reported.

After a lot of work clearing obstacles, I think we must have been the first to travel this track since winter, (sadly not photographed due to a wife who was not prepared to sacrifice comfort for rain in the interests of a good historical record) we got to the top of the ridge, where the weather cleared a little. It certainly gets windy up there.

We then joined the Nobbs Track, which said “very steep”, and started going down. It was right, especially after rain. Just before we got to the bottom, my son got on the UHF and said, I think this is the steep bit. It was extremely steep, but after 4 hrs I wasn’t going to go back, so down he went first, and I followed

About 6 km further along the road we came to a washed out bridge. Once again there was really no decision – Cross the river or go back up the ridiculously steep road, and 4 hrs. It was around sunset, so we decided to play amphibians.

All in all we had a great time. My suggestion is wait till the rains have gone for some time before going down. Then there will be many more tracks open. I think they will need another two to three months before all tracks are cleared and repaired.

Fantastic trip! Sometimes a trip in wet weather beats hot and dusty conditions.

You wouldn't have tracked the trip on Ozi? I'd love to try this out later on next year.

          Sadly, no.

You will find the tracks in "The High Country - Mansfield and Mt Buller" brocure (free) and the "Rooftop's: Mansfield - Mt.Howitt Adventure Map" $8 from the Mansfield information bureau. They were quite helpful.

Yes the mud was fun. It was a little disappointing, though, that so many tracks were still closed, including all the tracks to Craig's hut. You could do an 8km walk up the hill if you were keen.

I've heard Craig's will be closed until at least March, pity as they were going to run another 'Christmas at Craig's' dinner.

That looks like a great trime. Shame about Craig's Hut but maybe another time. I'll have to get around to this at some stage.

Very very nice! That's another tour to add to the list. Boy, the list just keeps getting longer.

Great quality shots. What camera do you use ?
Love the High Country in that area especially with the mist rolling in.
You need to pack a chainsaw next time

                        Nah

The son got talking to the bridge repairers who were camping at the riverside and didn't bother to take any pics

Thanks Glen. It was taken by my son. The colour seemed to last for quite a while, so it gave lots of opportunity to try different settings etc.

Interesting that. I made the mistake of saving $30 by buying an electric one to prune tree at home. As soon as I finished I realised what a dill I was.

We were using two cameras. A Cannon 20D with an L series 17-40mm lense and a Canon IXUS 110IS

We took some video too. When I figure out how to put it up on Youtube I might add a link. It is a very beautiful part of the world.
