You may have missed the boat on this trip. With the opening of the Indian Ocean drive, the Dept of Defence have seen fit to close the tracks thru the Lancelin Defence Training area. There is an article about the closure of the tracks on http://www.perth4x4.net/forum/archiv...p?t-38277.html.

You can still get to the Lancelin dunes via Lancelin (of course) and there is access to Wedge Island , Grey, Cervantes, Jurien, Sandy Cape, Green Head etc. off Indian Ocean Drive. Plenty of beach and dune driving around each of these places but not the experience you are looking for.

Just head (north) up Wanneroo road from Joondalup and in around an hour and forty mins you are in Cervantes. Not nearly as much fun as shaking your teeth out along Thong Fence or belting along the beach north of Wedge, but there are still plenty of places to get sandy when you get here.
