  • Grampians in March - Advice Needed

    Hey All.

I'm working up a plan to spend 4 days in the Grampians over March long weekend. I am after some advice on the difficulty of the terrain, and which tracks are worth while and which I should avoid. I will be going this solo, with the wife and kids at this stage.

At present, the Grampians are closed to all visitors. Apparently there is significant damage to roads and tracks etc. Is this a knee-jerk reaction to the rain, or have you Victorians-in-the-know heard of any significant damage? Is it likely to impact my trip in March? If so, I may can this plan and head elsewhere.

    Thanks in advance -
    Ian.

Re: Grampians in March - Advice Needed

    Hi Iantz,

I don't have access to any maps at the moment but two years ago around the time of the Avalon airshow I did a lot of the trails in one of Avis's X-Trails without any hassles. There was only one occasion way way out the back somewhere skirting a lake I took it a bit casual through a boggy bit and had a sphincter clenching moment - it would have been a long walk for help and the look on the missus's face told me who was going to do the walking!

    Cheers,

    Dave

Its been quite a while since we visited the grampians, we actually left the day of the Major fires there and were looking at the smoke in the mirror. We drove a lot of the tracks towing the camper trailer and didn't have any concerns at all. Rosea Track is the only one i remember a name of as we have a photo of the sign. I imagine things may well have changed a fair bit since our visit.

      Cheers Andrew

Thanks guys. I have heard that the tracks are fairly well kept and have only heard of one or maybe two double diamond runs, but I can't remember if they're only rated difficult after heavy rain.

I am after a fairly laid back 'touring' trip, but wouldn't mind one or two 'sphincter' clenching moments ;-)
