  • Fraser Island Conditions post floods??

    Hi guys,

Heading up to Fraser next weekend for the first time. I have looked up to the DERM report which states there are numerous road closures post rain.

Has anyone been to Fraser in the last couple of weeks? How are the beaches and roads?

    Thanks,

Re: Fraser Island Conditions post floods??

I was up there a month ago. 4 weeks I think, just after Brisbane floods. Same road closures as seen now. The inland roads were a bit worse for wear but the main tourist tracks were passable no problems in a standard prado. While I was there DERM were filling in holes etc. on these tourist tracks.

The less used tracks were not maintained that well, obviously low on the priority list. We did the track from the eastern beach to lake wabby lookout. That was doable. We then continued to central station and got well and truly stuck. The track had a lot of exposed roots on an uphill section and there was a fair step up on a large pile of roots with sand at the top. I needed to winch over this. I do not have a lift kit, not sure if it would have been enough. There were signs of others being stuck and trying to fashion traction aids from logs and sticks. Also a pile of broken off plastic bits.

Southern beaches at the time had a lot of debris on them from the flooding in Gympie and Marybourogh, but one you got to Eurong it was as though nothing had happened. Beaches were all fine to drive on with care not to do tyre damage on debris in the south. In the two days we were there the beaches got a lot better, so they are probably close to normal by now.

The tracks with problems are mostly well sign posted.

In short, nothing out of the ordinary to worry about. Have a great trip.
