Hoping you could advise a replacement shock for my Jayco Expanda Offroad (sorry not a Prado, but its towed behind a Prado). It currently runs the standard fit ALKO shocks as found on most trailer/caravans fited with ALKO suspension.
I'm happy to help. We match up a lot of things like this for people.
I will need a few measurements from you though to try and match it up.
-Fully Extended length measured from the centre of the eyes on both ends.
-Fully Compressed length measured from the centre of the eyes on both ends.
-Installed length centre to centre again when fitted to the Van whilst sitting in normal resting position on the ground.
-Diameter of the Stud that the bushes slide on to.
-Width of the eye on the shock.
-Fully Extended length measured from the centre of the eyes on both ends. 380mm
-Fully Compressed length measured from the centre of the eyes on both ends. 250mm
-Installed length centre to centre again when fitted to the Van whilst sitting in normal resting position on the ground. 285mm
-Diameter of the Stud that the bushes slide on to. It's actually a bolt with an OD of 12mm
-Width of the eye on the shock. The eye is 24mm wide, but if you meant the ID of the eye its 29-30mm as the pressed eye is inconsistent or out of round.

Happy hunting and thanks for the assistance
Hi again.
Will have a look today for you. That installed length is a bit of a worry with how they have set it up. That means it only has 35mm of "bump" Travel before it bottoms out & it has 95mm of "rebound" Travel.
I might try to find a shock with a slightly shorter Compressed length to stop it bottoming out & dying prematurely. It shouldn't be a problem.
One last Question, where does the Shock mount in relation to the arm?
Is it right down the back of the arm or halfway up etc?
I have been through KYB, EFS, Koni, Bilstein, Tough Dog, Sachs, Ultima & Powerdown/Raw 4x4 Shocks.
I was only able to come up with 2 options for you from all of these suppliers! (I had hoped for more)
Koni have an 80 Series adjustable shock that is pretty right in the valving, it's just that they are concerned that it might not be Heavy Duty enough for it long term & they won't warrant it in this application.
340mm open length 240mm closed length
They are $225.00 a pair & normally retail for $295.00 a pair
KYB have a shock that originated under the back of a VW Transporter Van that they normally use as a replacement for this sort of application.
388mm open length 250mm closed length
They are $132.00 a pair which includes freight to get them from KYB to me & KYB's rrp on them is $115.00+gst ea which i think is ambitious!
It does look like the closed length of the shocks is too long. Are there no more alternatives that have a shorter closed and open length? 35mm doesn't seem like much travel from normal rest height until it bottoms out. If there are no more alternatives, then I would go with the Koni due to the shorter closed length by 10mm. Better long term reliability that way.
To answer your question: the van is just your standard leaf spring set up with the shock mounted to the chassis and the spring fish plate.
I did note the shocks weren't resting in the center of their travel and based on the shocks you can supply I need to come up with a different mounting position to correct the travel. Once I've done that I think the Koni's maybe the go, as long as there valving isn't to stiff.
Andrew thanks for your input, as for the lift idea - I converted the van to a spring over configuration some time ago resulting in a 8 inch lift, yes 8 inches so there wont be any further lifting.

Happy to help.
If you're looking at remounting the pick up points & can make it so we can get at least 50mm or 60mm more in the open length, it will open us up to a fair few more options.
Maybe move the top mount backwards & put the Shock on a bit of an angle to get the extra length. Something like this below.
Barring that just do a body lift to give you more room...... If it's already 8 inches up, what's another 2 :-)
Hi Jason, I've been a big fan of King Coils and Koni Shocks ever since I had this combination fitted to my 90 series a few years back. I have tried a few name brands over my time but the Kings just seem to have more 'lasting' power in them. Admittedly the other suspensions were leaf springs in my old Hi-Lux and Cruisers but you try things once and if they fail you never forget
To the point.
I now have a 120 series D4D I'm doing up, putting an ARB Bar, Warn Winch (these I like), duel battery in the front. Out the back I tow a steel 4x4 camping trailer, 60L water, long draw bar, but not much in the car rear. I did have air-bag lift in a previous vehicle and loved the ability to adjust the ride dependant on if I was towing. I think that may be the answer for my new set-up seeing as I don't tow the trailer all that often.
OK onto the good bits.
I want around 50mm lift (2"), running Kings and Konis with air-bags rear (unless you have a reason to suggest otherwise).
