Also, would a 14mm screw rip straight out over a big speed bump? Don't know how thick or thin that metal plate would be (where the anchor points are in).

I was thinking of getting a hose clamp, and tying those around the anchor point for the 3rd row seat and then up and over a cut out in the base of your drawer system... then you can tighten it as much as you can. To remove it, just unscrew that clamp and off you go. You'd put 4 in and I think that that would be extremely sturdy.

Good call or bad call? Anyone tried this?

    Hi Lorenzo,
I used the four tiedown nutserts to hold down my drawers, 2 years later and haven't had any dramas.

Did you have to take out those u bolts that usually connect to the third row of seat? How do you remove them if so? 14mm screws just go straight in? Must be a pain in the ass to line up the drawer system with those holes!

        • Hi there...Great thread full of ideas, but unfortunately nothing for the SWB. I'm planning to do a drawer system for my SWB 90. I used to borrow from friend his engel which fitted perfectly when the seat is folded as you can see in the back. Anyway I just bought an ARB fridge and it's 5.5cm deeper so it doesn't fit. I want to build a drawer system with the same height as the folded back seat to put the fridge on top. I usually fold half the seat so I can still have 3 passengers in the car.

My rear space is 64 cm deep and the ARB fridge is 70.5cm. Of course the drawer system can't be the total of 64 cm because of the rear seat. I'm assuming the drawers will be 59-60 cm long and need to figure out a way to install the fridge.

Fitted the water tank with a pump so there is no such poses when taking a shower anymore!

          • Just thought I'd give a little back to this thread as it's given so much to me.

I've used 16mm MDF to make drawers for my 90 series, but if I was to do it again I'd use ply as the MDF splits to easily when screwed from the end, even after pre-drilling the holes. When I do my final assembly I'll also glue all joints.
I'm using 4 M8 threads that were already in the floor along with countersunk high tensile 45mm M8 bolts to hold the drawers in place. I have left all the seat mounts in place and simply rebated the bottom sheet to sit flat on the floor over them, this way I can undo the 4 bolts and the whole unit slides out the back door opening, allowing me to refit the rear seats in about 10 minutes.
I'm using 1 set of lock closed/lock open and 1 set of non locking 125kg drawer runners from UES International. They were by far the cheapest I could find and have a very smooth action. They are made out of 2mm thick plate with ball bearing runners.
A pair of 900mm locking runners cost $98 and the non locking $89, this was $50 cheaper than anything I could find on ebay.
I got spring loaded case handles from Jaycar that fit flush with the outside of the drawer for $16 as I'm using the slides to lock the drawers in place.
When finished I'll carpet the entire box. I went to a couple of car stereo installers looking for carpet and they put me onto a place called Vyfab in Bignell Rd Moorabbin, Vic (Sorry everyone from interstate) They supply all the car stereo installers and have a huge range of colours and styles, including carpet with a self adhesive backing!!! I got one they call Freeway that is one of the harder wearing ones they stock. It comes in at 2.4m wide and is a lot more flexible than the stuff they sell at Bunnings and only cost $18 per meter. They also had marine carpet and lighter duty as well.
I haven't finished yet but will post up some pictures when I have.

              • Here are some pictures of my finished drawers (just to prove they do exist Trekrider)

I plan on fitting an air compressor behind the wheel arch on the left and a second battery to run a fridge behind the right wheel arch. The 'wings' will allow access to these and allow the unit to be removed out the rear door opening.

                  • Hi Apples,

what is latch mechanism you used for the drawers. You can see both of them towards the centre of pic1 and pic4.
BTW, the drawers you've made do look pretty schmick.

                    cheers

                      • Hi Apples,

I'm on the verge of building these myself. Have already bought the slides and the latches. Just need to get a hold of some plywood and the carpet... love the way your draws look and the way they are above the wheel arches... any chance you took some measurements, and have some pics of the build? Also, how did you secure it to the car?

                        Cheers,

                        • Hi Stewy,

Sorry about the slow reply, I haven't been online for a while. The latch mechanism I've used is is part of the draw slides, they lock in the open and closed positions and is operated by the small orange lever you can see pocking through near the middle of the drawers. I bought one set of locking slides and one set of non locking and used one of each on each drawer. I've listed where i got them from in my first post.

                          • Hi Lorenzo,

I've got a 90 series so my dimensions wont apply to your 120 but from memory they are 997mm wide between the wheel arches and 1010mm deep. I have a an additional 40mm lip that extends to the rear seat and a 30mm lip to the rear door to stop anything falling down the gaps. the drawers are 240mm high x 430mm wide and 1000mm deep. I intended taking some build pics but ended up rushed for time finishing the drawers before I went away after xmas so that got forgotten about.
I started by cutting the biggest size panel I could fit between wheel arches, back seat and door and built up from there. I had to cut sections out over the 3rd row seat anchors to get it to sit flat as I wanted to keep them in place. I pulled the carpet up and found 4 unused 8mm threads in the floor so used 4 x 8mm high tensile countersunk bolts to bolt it all down. It is as simple as detach both drawers from the runners and undo the 4 bolts and the whole assembly slides out the back door with the wheel arch 'wings' folded up if i ever need to fit the 3rd row seats. Once again I have no idea if the 120 has any threads in the floor like my 90 series, other than the seat anchors of course.
