    Hi guys,
Great work by all. Just wondering if anyone who has made a unit put anything between the carpet and draws for protecting carpet from wear?
If not has it showing any wear ? Was at bunnings today they want $37m for carpet !!
I just made a second set for the back of mine, carpet $25 a metre from the upholsterer and glue $10 a litre, if you are going to put something over the carpet to protect it, why put the carpet in in the first place. i have had no problems with the carpet in my black widow drawers over the last 3 years.

    Cheers Andrew

Thanks guys you make good points i was thinking of taking the carpet out but like you say the draws should't move anyway . Other than taking them out when not needed.

Draw runners are from UESind'l telescopic industrial type 700mm long and 45kg rated $18 per pair. I have read this entire thread about three times, and I have finally got around to building my own set of drawers. Firstly, I would like to thank all the contributors to this thread, who have built their own drawers. Without your inspiration and designs I would never have attempted this. I built my drawers using 15mm ply from Bunnings (I tried at MrPly&Wood but Bunnings were quite a bit cheaper for this size of plywood). I got them to cut to size, but of course found that I had to trim quite a bit myself. I bought a fine-tooth blade for my power saw and had no trouble making reasonably neat cuts. I used marine carpet again from Bunnings (I looked at Clark Rubber, but Bunnings marine carpet was cheaper than Clark's non-marine carpet). I bought runners from ebay, for about $100 a pair. They are supposedly rated for 100kg, which is much more than I will ever need. So far I am very happy with them. I took my time (started in May, finished last weekend, installed today), to spread out the cost a bit as well as having to take time amongst the other stuff that fills up the weekend. Cost? About $700 including all the plywood, runners, screws, carpet, glue, plus a few extra tools I had to get to complete the job (saw blade, etc). End result, see for yourselves, but I am wrapped. It will allow me to keep stuff out of the way in the car that I would normally leave in the garage, such as firstaid kit, compressor, jumper leads, etc.

                Now for the photos.

I copied Chippy's design and used the 3rd row seat holders as the main brackets for the drawers

The carpet was not as hard as I thought it would be. I found a forum where someone was giving tips on using contact glue to stick down carpet. It was really helpful. Sorry, I didn't save the URL. I used 2 different contact glues. The 1st was a gel which is applied with a notched tool. This was what I used for the top, but it was too hard getting the gel out of the tin, and I got it all over my hands. Also used too much. I then tried a more liquid contact glue that is applied using a paint brush. This was much easier to use and went further. Apply to both sides, leave to dry for 10 minutes, then stick down. On the larger surface (the top) I used 10 or 12 10mm wood dowels to keep the carpet away from the wood until I had it positioned. Then remove the dowel and press down (working from the centre to the outside). Smooth out using a block of wood to get any rough patches or air bubbles out. Trim the edges with a (very) sharp stanley knife. Also used a rubber mallet to bang down the edges. Used clamps with wooden battens to hold down the edges. On surfaces where I was carpeting around 2 sides, I glued one side first then when that was done I did the other side. Also I found it easier to cut the carpet slightly oversize then trim it with the knife.

Yeah the secret is to use a good quality spray adhesive and to spray both surfaces, then let the glue go off for 5 mins or so... Once thats done then apply the carpet and smooth the air bubbles out. Put some weight on it and leave for a few hours... Try not to stretch it as it will pull back in over time ...

I used 3M brand throughout on my setup. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Even better cos I "borrowed" a couple of cans from work. I will take em back when I am finished

Quick question to those with drawers - how much clearance, if any, do you allow at the back of the drawer? I've drawn some up with a 20mm gap, they'll be locked shut by a T latch. Is that the way to go? (I'm referring to the gap between the back of the drawer and the unit itself, if that makes sense!)

As an aside, I wanted the unit to sit 12mm higher than the folded down second row seats in my 90 series, so I can add a sleeper extension later. Came out at 330mm high, which sounds alot, but rechecked and seems accurate. Sound right? They'll be nice deep drawers anyway!

                              Thanks,

                              Cam

If I had my time again I would have made the drawers at least 270mm high on the inside to carry a 30 pack.
Also I put 2 latches on the drawer which is a pain if you have one hand full. You cant open it.

As far as the depth goes, I tried to use as much room as possible. The biggest restriction can be the drawer slides you use if you want everything fully supported.
