  • Tigerz11 Roof Rack causing my car to leak

Ok guys this is more of a rant than anything

I bought a Tigerz11 tent topper rack. now after getting warranty on my first one due to rust, I am now trying to get warranty on it because when it rains or I wash my car water is running down my pillars soaking the seatbelts ETC.

this has been warranty claim has been going on for months and here is the email received from them a few days ago.

    Hi Jesse

The warranty team have looked into your matter. As this matter has never occurred before with any other rack they were unsure how it could be occurring so they contacted Toyota to find out more details on the car. They stated that it's likely a factory seal has been disturbed by the fitting and has caused the leak. The bolt themselves can't leak into the roof we clarified this with Toyota, there is a white plastic part that sits where the metal cylinders go over, the white plastic can split if they get distributed. As the leak isn't being caused by the rack itself we are unable to cover it under warranty as it's not faulty. I recommend that you give
Toyota a call and discuss the matter further with them, they did suggest using silicone seal around the areas.

    Amy

Now I cant find any plastic parts, if anyone else has had this issue or know a fix other than filling the cavity with silicon please help. I am appalled by there customer service.

    DO NOT BUY TIGERZ11

    thanks
    Jesse

I do know that if you don't re seal those bolts properly you can get water come through, when I fitted mine I just put silicone around the heads of all the bolts and then fitted them. However looks like tigers is just trying to weasel there way out. Did you fit this yourself or did they?

There is a white plastic tube in the bolt hole and an O-ring goes outside of it when I installed the Rhino Rack.

What parts are supplied with the rack that goes under the feet of the rack? It sounds like there is something missing.

      Can you provide some photos?

I think their response is correct and reasonable. Perhaps all they could have done differently is have a warning in their instructions but they can't be expected to know everything that can go wrong on every single vehicle. The rust is another issue, that certainly goes to the quality of their racks.

Jester as Andrew has said there is a white plastic tube the sits around the holes through the roof. Water can get inside by running between the tube and the bolt or outside the bolt. I helped a mate install his Tigerz roofrack and the seals they provide are worse than useless. I would use that word to describe the whole fitting kit to be honest. The only way you are going to get it to work is remove the rack and the feet and clean everything up. Then reinstall using lots and lots of silicone sealant. On my 120 I used an ARB fitting kit and instead of little o rings it comes with a full rubber sheet that fits tightly over the little plastic tubes. Way better than factory but I still used lots of silicone.

I would push the issue with Tigerz because the thin little seals won't do anything without a lot of help from Mr Sikaflex.

Yea I'm thinking of just getting ARB Fitting kit. The fitting kit is appalling and the instructions are even worse. Thanks for the advice guys.

And use Sikaflex sealant as stated as normal silicone will degrade over time.

Jester, when you took of the Prado racks there should have been some rubber o rings on the bottom of the mounting plates. These would be under the plate so no easy to see. They have to go back under the mounting plate of the Tigers rack. With out these seals you will get water in.

                  Hey Jester,
As per previous comments you need to make sure the o rings are there or not damaged . When i bought my 120 i had heaps of water coming down the pillars only to find some o rings missing from under my roof rack mounts. Fitted new o rings with a touch of silicone and not a drop has leaked since. If you want o rings let me know and I'll send you some as i bought a bag of 50 and only needed 8.

Ive got a tigers rack and all I have done is covered it all in sikaflex. Well worth doing to ensure it doesn't leak. Id do it even if I had an arb or any other brand for that matter.
