  • Whilst waiting for the amts bracket to get to final production version, I decided to bolt the compressor down in the 2nd battery spot as I have a trip coming up and dragging the compressor out every time I want to use it is a bit of a pain. Apart from the install location, this guide was very helpful, and using the ARB harness made the job relatively easy. Location and colour of wire connections and the requirement for fuse were especially handy, so thanks. D4D here, so I used the ignition hookup. The reason people are getting flaky connection on that green lighting wire is because the gauge of the wire is finer than most scotchlocks. I soldered it.

Here it is, all bolted up.

Mount plate is 3mm steel coated with killrust aluminium spray paint. For once, I managed to drill the holes exactly in the right place.

The only problem with this is that I have somehow managed to do such a good job of this that it will be painfull to disassemble it all again to relocate it to the other side...

Good job, looks great. Are you fitting a battery in there at some point? Just seems a shame to move it.

      • Yep, know what you mean.

No plans to fit a second battery up front, have one in the rear.

Bitumen is boring, at least it can get you to the next off road adventure

Nothing special. We have a Thumper 60AH battery that is strapped to the cargo barrier under the lifestyle rack. It powers the fridge and various chargers etc. Works well, takes the load off the start battery.

              • I bought a compressor at an open day today and once home opened up the box to find mile of wiring. I am mounting the compressor as PhotoPrado has above and will leave a switch near the compressor under the bonnet. What has everyone else done with all of the extra wiring (Locker switches/ solenoids) ect? Do I just tape it up out of the way?

                • I cut the harness for the switch and soldered the connections closer and didn't fit the solenoid bits. Trace out which wires you need just to operate the compressor and ignore the rest.

                  • Considering my Prado is my 1st 4WD, am I wrong to think about installing my under bonnet compressor with a good quality remote fob switch (similar to a car alarm)? I assumed that I would want to switch it off when I was at each tyre then back on again without having to go back into the drivers cabin? Is there something I'm not seeing or don't know about because this seems easier to me?
                    Juz.

                    • There's a pressure switch which switches off the compressor automatically.

At a preset PSI or do you dial it in? Sounds like a good unit - was considering the Tigerz11 one.

                        • Preset. I once forgot to turn it off. Then in the quiet of the night, I could hear a 'burp' coming from the engine bay. Turns out the compressor comes on for a fraction of a second to restore the pressure back to the preset value.

                          • I have wired mine with a relay and dash mounted switch, the switch gets the power from an accessories relay that I also added.
This way the Compressor (Or other devices) will only get power when the ignition is in acc or on, no risk of accidently leaving things turned on and flattening the battery.

                            • I decided against butchering up the ARB wiring harness and ended up making one from scratch since all of my mounting was under the bonnet. I must say that the ARB wiring diagram certainly is confusing to look at and I found it an absolute nightmare to decipher but in the end finally got it sorted. Thanks to all for their input.

                              • I mounted my compressor under bonnet using one of AMTS bracket's (highly recommend).
Swapped out the ARB switch for a custom rocker one and installed it in the centre console.
