  • winches, winches, winches

I've bought the winch bracket and now need the winch to go into my Sovereign bar. There is piles of info available on winches, though little is really objective so it's hard to form strong conclusions.

But, from looking over threads on PP I think I've worked out:
    1. 9000 lbs is enough
    2. Go for synthetic rope and light winch to keep the weight down as the 120 chassis is a bit weak at the front (true?)
    3. Make sure you spool rope off and back on regularly under load to help keep the winch working well and to dry it out. (I've never had a winch before so don't really know what I'm talking about......)

I'm thinking about the new Gunshot from Premier - about $1250 but can't find any info on weight.

Or the VRS V9500s Water Proof - about $1050

But the interesting one is the Sherpa Colt - which is very light (23 kg) with synthetic rope and well priced ($729) - but can't find much info on them.

Anyone got any info or have one of these?

How long have you got mate?? ha ha
we stock Ironman4x4, WARN, VRS and Premier..
You pay for what you get, however value for money the Ironman4x4 is a ripper..
9500lb with synthetic rope is around $900..
not saying its the best, but bang for buck you cant go wrong.. we have sold a few and no problems reported to date..

Give MickL a pm, quite a few have bought Runvas and from what I heard a great product for a good price. I was going to get one for another vehicle but alas it was binned before I did.

        Another couple of things Willis.
Is it fully sealed against water ingress?
        Max amp draw?
        How fast is it?

Big fan of the Runva 11xp here.

-Fits (just) into the sov bar winch bracket.
-Yes it is slightly over powered for what the bracket is rated at, but I can't ever see me using that capacity anyway! I'm not going to winching & towing or anything like that.
-Saved my bacon up at the Cape a couple of times. Has never let me down.
-I'm told the warranty is great, though I've never had to use it.
-Can be bought for a very good price relative to similar spec/quality winches!

I got the Runva 12,000lb in my ARB bar. works an absolute treat.
had it for about 6 months

they give 5 year Electrical Warranty, Lifetime Mechanical, and with some silicone on the earth lead its water proof.
came with a corded and wireless remote, rope and all for $700.

            so far im quite happy.

yes another for the Runva 11XP here.

Where did you get yours from HugoStiglitz? I'm from Sunny Coast also.

I got mine from Overland 4x4 and fitted it myself.

I've used it a few times now. Winching cars and just last weekend, pulling trees off tracks. has worked very well each time.

Thanks for the info - I have also heard only good things about the Runva and Ironman winches.

Has anyone tried the Sherpa winch? Other than their own advertising I can find very little further info.

                      So many choices....

Ended up with the VRS 9500 with synthetic rope from OL. They were very helpful and not far away if I need parts etc.

Just need to fit it up then learn how to use it!

Some of the photos in the Calendar competition are truly inspiring to get out there!

We bought 2 Sherpa 17000 Steed winches for our 100 and brothers 200.
                          Wish i didn't.
Electrical issues, controller wired wrong, terminals on motor too short, difficult to fit solenoid and to top it off the gearbox seems to be crunching.
Hope to get a replacement unit.

                          Rusty.

Just pulled my Bushranger 9500 apart for something to do on a rainy day. It was really good inside considering it's been under the bar for 6 years and had a fair bit of use and abuse. The only (predictable) issue is the drum got all rusty from the wet rope. I have stripped and painted it once before and will clean it up and repaint it again. Replace the grease and all good for another 6 years.

                              Looks good Dave.
My problem and what others have told me with winches has been in the motor getting water inside and rusting the brush carrier and particularly the brush springs rusting out. Hope yours are all good.
