Poor niteowl above didn't get a reply in 2006 ............... my question is slightly different, does anyone know of any bullbar mounted rod holders that a) can be flipped over back towards the car when not in use so they don't protrude past the front of the car, and b) have a mounting system that doesn't scratch/damage the bar?

      stephenvsl and niteowl,

niteowl,...This reply may have taken 3 yrs, but here's what I've found recently.

I was flicking through the Spring 09 Newsletter from ARB a little while back and noticed some interesting rod holders for bullbars. The Rodlok Quick Release Holders look great and are said to be on an easy release system and are friendly to painted tubular bullbars. I'm interested myself to talk to ARB about this product, as I'm nervous about the effect on the paint finish of any mounted object, to my ARB Deluxe Bar. This has been the main reason why I've never clamped on those aluminium ones.

Looks as if you get 2 x holders for $109, but I guess you can always add another if you wish

You can check it out online at ARB SPRING 09 Catalog , just flick through to page34.

      Hope this helps

          Re: fishing rod holder

A few weeks ago I came across a grey nomad that was fishing on the beach.

He had made his own rod holder that came off the towing hitch that i thought was a great idea.

He dad a bar that was perpendicular to the tow hitch that was a jack knife guard, to the ends of that he had welded tube that acted as rod holders so he had not restricted his view and it could be used with or without the caravan on the back, simple, brilliant (if this isn't clear and you are interested let me know and i will sketch something up, unfortunatly i didn't get any pics).

I tell you what, those grey nomads might drive slow, but they still come up with some good ideas!

            Re: fishing rod holder

Seen at BCF a detachable rod holder might be what you want. Looks like the standard ali rod holders you see on every 4wd on the beach, but the main plate has a square tube in the middle instead of the ubolts then it slides into and another bracket that can be left on the bull bar.Retails for about $60.
I have the standard ubolt one, works well thread some plastic tubing over the ubolts a bit of rubber between the plate and bar and minimal scratching (easily buffed out).
About resting them on your roof rack, I did this first up ok if you put padding on the rack, just looks crappy after hooks catching it and the weather, so mine hangs above the rack and no dramas over the last year.
Just a handy hint (learnt the hard way), easier to leave your rods rigged up sinker and all. Just use the good old lecy tape to secure the sinker to the rod! Or you may see a star sinker bouncing on your windscreen as your going thru boggy sand that wont let you stop without swallowing you!
Also made a locking bar to secure them and to stop light fingers!
Got some pics of mine somewhere just have to find them!

It seems this thread has turned the way of looking at the RodLok system rod holders..........so to save another thread specifically titled as so, I will continue.

Has anybody tried this system apart from qserv who notes that they will not fit around the Sahara Bar. On that, what is the dia of the Sahara Bar?

Is there any more feedback on the functionality of these?

                  Cheers, Rhet

                    Re: fishing rod holder

I have the Rodlok holders. They are quite soft and flexy and the rods wobble around all over yhe place. You really need to buy the extra magnetic bit that sticks on your roof above the windscreen to hold the rod tips. They are pretty handy though, quick to get on and off.

Does anybody know where you get the extra magnetic strip that sits above your windscreen to stop the paint getting scratched from the rods bouncing about in soft sand? Rat mentioned them in his reply!!!

                        Re: fishing rod holder

I bought a couple of these and fitted them to the side of my roof rack. The surf rod was then tied through the tip runner to the bullbar top tube with nylon twine. Works well. Only problem now is that it is also used to hold two kayak paddles! Running out of room for rods. Anyway these can be left on the roof rack and don't get in the way when not in use.

                          Re: fishing rod holder

You can get the magnetic base from BCF, although they were out of stock at the Underwood (Bris) store. Ended up picking one up at Jones Tackle at Kedron-ish area.

Just returned from a few days over at Moreton and found that with the magnetic support, the system works quite well. Although a 10.5' light surf rod does flex and wobble a little as the magnetic support on the roof doesn't make contact with the rod until about the 3rd last guide.

                            Re: fishing rod holder

                            Parts used:

Toyota roof rack $255 (the two top bars only)

The following parts I got from Bunnings for about $50
100mm x 3000mm Plumbing pipe - I cut to 2150mm, can use hack saw or a small tooth hand saw.
                            100mm end cap for pipe
100mm screw-on end cap for pipe
Small bottle of primer and glue
                            2 120MM TO 150MM hose clamps.

Now before I installed the roof racks I removed the rubber strip that goes on top of the rail measured about 200mm from the end and drilled 3 4mm holes in the channel where the rubber strip goes. Slot it out to allow the hose clamp to slide through. I used the cardboard box that the rails come in sit the rails on to prevent scratching.

From those holes I measured 90mm along and drilled another 3 holes for the hose clamp to come back through. End result is:

I positioned the pipe back far enough so that you don't get crap on your clothes when getting the rods out.

There is enough room to put 4 rods in

                            Winston.

While on recent school holidays had bought 100mm plumbing pipe/ends to carry fishing rods more easily. As did it on short notice, just used straps/cable ties to secure to the 3 toyota roof racks and cage.
Was now looking at a more asthetic/permament /secure option and came across winnillis above using 150mm hose clamps drilled through the bars.
Have any other PP members used other options to secure plumbing pipes to your roof racks??
While trawling the net, also came accross the VAC:RAC. A suction or magnetic option per this link

                              http://vacrac.com.au/

They say are legal, secure rods etc - for $109 bucks to not have to re-rigg your fishing gear. For short trips not a bad option. Anyone had experience with these?

                              Thanks for your input

                              Cheers
