I don't mind the look of that! Fairly unobtrusive!

      Wow Sergi! Looks sensational.

Why is it that our local products can't be as functional and still look sexy?

I like the Sahara bar as well - very nice.

        I like the colour aswell.

Why would they make every other snorkel BLACK.
        They look better colour coded.
They put intercoolers on the turbo diesel to keep the air as cool as possible and the we throw on a black snorkel.
Have you ever put your hand on one while in the sun. ouch.
Not a real good start for the air temp.
Also while Im on the soap box about air temp.
Why did toyota put the air duct to the intercooler under the bonnet skin.
How hot would that air be by the time it hits the intercooler.??????

        Jeff.

I'll have to go against the flow and so I think its ugly....

Seems more suited to a Toorak Tractor.

The intercooler is only good when you are doing a 100km/h's down the road and have the air flow going over it and at that speed the air is cool.
It is useless when at low speed.
If you want the intercooler to work at low speed change it to a air on water intercooler.

I have the Safari. I hear a slight rushing sound around the snorkel, pretty minor and no whistles. I have the 3.0TD and I think I may have slightly (very slightly) worse fuel economy. I can't prove it, maybe my driving style has changed a bit. I tried reversing the snorkel (facing backwards) but that WAS noisy, I turned it forwards again within a day or 2. Properly fitted noise isn't really an issue.

A tip: unless your a masochist don't fit it yourself. I did and it's a pain. I just like doing stuff myself, I'm funny like that. I had most of the tools including the holesaw arbor, and only needed to buy the actual sawblade. By the time you buy the gear, do all the work, there are 50 ways to stuff it up, it's not worth the trouble. Book it in and go to the pictures, easy!

                Cheers Phil.

Yes there is (from memory) a few 19mm holes and 1x 95mm hole in the guard. If you do it at work then you know what your up for, the rest is fairly straight forward just fiddly. The inner guard liner is secured by black square plastic plugs, buy about 8 from Toyota before you do the job, they are buggers to get out, some are blind, you'll end up drilling the guts out of them. Make sure the A pillar bracket is oriented correctly before you drill, it is possible to fit it backwards, I can send a photo if required. Good Luck!

edit: For future reference the part number of the guard liner plugs is 901 8906065.

Good to hear someone else say this. I'm also a big fan for doing it myself where practical - but I could do without the headache of this one - the biggest problem for me was getting up the courage to trust the local 4x4 place to do the job, it's not them, it's just me being paranoid. :-) All in all, I'm very happy I got them to do it. $140 labour - well worth it.

FWIW, I paid $550 cash fitted, therefore $410 hardware only.

Let us know how you get on,

                      Drew.

anyone ever seen a safari or otherwise available one to Oz that has been colour coded? would be interested to see what it looked like... may have to have a play with photoshop!

I also wonder about the impact of the hot air created by the black snorkel. Although watching the data on my ScanGaugeII reveals that once you are moving and sucking a reasonable amount of air through the system the inlet air temp isn't all that much higher than ambient.

                          See: http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?p=4279#4279

I wonder what success you would have trying to paint the polyethylene?

I do like the "I'm not here to chase spiders" look of the Safari snorkels. They certainly look fair dinkum.

I notice on bush tracks a lot of scrub rubs against the snorkel, it might be alright for city boys, but I wouldn't expect it to last very long. Think of it as "Utilitarian" 8)

                              Hi Phil,

Sorry its off topic but I see you have the latest GXL. I am waiting for mine to arrive. Does yours have the idle up button? How is the fuel economy going.

                                I fitted ours myself.
There is a little apprehention before the questions you ask and reask youreself are answered 100%.( is this the right way?)

One 95mm holesaw and try useing a step drill. Alot easier than a normal drill.
From memory there is one hole that cant be drilled by the step drill.

I also put one on a patrol of a friend ( yes they are still friends).
It also needed the inner guard drilled 95mm.

If you do do it yourself, cover the plastic guard below the hole with masking tape, Hot metal will stick into the plastic and rust.
Also cover all the areas to drill with masking tape. It protects the duco from hot metal.

                                Jeff.
