  • Driving Lights

May seem like a silly question to some, but I’ve just acquired a set of Super Oscar driving lights with one “spread” and one “spot”. Which side do you guys normally mount the “spot” and why?

I’m leaning toward mounting it on the driver’s side to get more penetration down the centre of the road, but am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks in advance ….. Geoff M

Thanks for that Hayesy ....... I thought that was the right way to fit them, but wanted a second opinion.

I am getting driving lights fitted and i am leaning towards both being spot beams. Thinking this way after reading other posts regarding lighting, as others were sometimes disappointed with one spot and one spread.

Also then needing another spot taking it to three lights. Any thoughts would be good to hear as to why i should rethink and go with a spread.

on my last 4wd (93 4runner) i went with 2 ipf spot beams.. i have had spot / wide combo's before, and found the 2x spots to be more effective.

Just to give some feed back i went the hella rallye ff 4000, they look awesome on the bar. I wanted two spot beams but the guy talked my wife into combo after she explained that she wanted to see the side of the road more.
While on holidays i had a chance to do some night driving and in my opinion i think the spot beams are the way to go.

Now all i have to do is sort out the low beam, as it is a big difference going from high beam with driving lights to the crap low beam. I have seen the posts about the IPF Fatbots might give them a go. Will be keeping an eye out for more posts about these from slads and others with these fatboys.

I can vouch for the IPF Fatboys - a great improvement, especially given that the standard headlights are probably the worst I have seen on a car since the old 6V Veedubs of the sixties (no exaggeration here, of course!!)

I reckon the standard lights are the only truly crap part of a Prado - but fortunately we can fix them!!

The Fatboys do run a little hot if the car is still and left on high beams for a while. Otherwise, the end result really is worth it.

Len from ARB Newcastle took care of mine.

Was towing boat motor and trailer which i guess the weight would be around 600 to 800kg and a load of gear in the back on a 31'c day. The temp needle move up a bit around half way which i guess is nothing to worry about.
It normally runs a bit below on the TD engine, this is since i have put the two hella's lights on. To tell the truth i don't no if it went up at all before the lights were put on the bar.

That maybe the case but they don't fit in the ARB bar.
But i am more than happy with the 4000's

After seeing the casulties of 4 years of rallying, I know which one lasts longer under severe vibration

I though that having and odd number of lights was illegal? Must be mounted in pairs? Still i have a pair of cibie oscars that work great!

I beleive the QLD rules are that it has to be symetrical... so 3 would be ok, as long as there's 1.5 on each half!

Not sure on other state though..
