  • What GPS options for the Dash stereo?

    Hi Guys,

Going to replace my standard stereo with a new Bluetooth, rear camera and hopefully decent GPS navigation.

What is my best option for one with a reliable and decent off road navigation.

Only real option I have seen is the VMS x series (http://www.vms4x4.com/collections/in...toyota-general).

I am open to having an iPad and mud maps, hema, etc but with the price of a standard stereo going in anyways and the convenience of having in car navigation wouldn't the cost still be near the $995 VMS want?

Thanks for any advice you may have.

I like the look of the VMS unit, I couldn't find any specs on whether it had pre outs for an amplifier as I want to upgrade the door speakers later on, does anyone know?

Not sure on the pre out specs but know the eq in the VMS is very basic, not great for anything other than standard/average sound. That being said there are a lot of amps these days that accept high level inputs (speaker level), and depending on how much you want to spend you can get an amp with inbuilt DSP (digital sound processor) that will except speaker level input and do the EQ job as well. So unless you are planning on using a amp you already have its not really a worry these days.

I went for the Pioneer AVIC F60DAB which suits my needs in video, audio, GPS, apple carplay. Great unit with plenty of inputs and outputs.

Navigation for me is a IPAD mini on a secured mount infront of the gear shift, loaded up with the MUDMAP app. Works awesome for 4WD tracks, and normal traveling. Plus you can just use another app thats free called NAVFREE for a more normal turn by turn GPS feel. Both APPS work offline without reception. Although you don't need a sim i your Ipad, you will need a Cellular model to get the GPS function.

The Polaris units are good, you can run OZI explorer on them and they also
                have TPMS, IPod facilities etc.

So my local dealer has a genuine Toyota GPS head unit for sale at the moment for $550, brand new and includes maps and everything. Apparently they made a stuff up and ordered more than needed, something like needed 3 and ordered 30, lol. Anyway, I fitted one to a customers cruiser ute last Friday and it looks tidy. PM me if you want more details, I could even send you a pic or two if needed.

Can I ask how it went installing into the Prado? Fits well? Did you buy this through eBay?
