  • Runva winches , mine failed , think twice about buying one

    I purchased a EWX 9500q competition winch
My 3rd use of it and it failed me half way up a hill climb. I was stuck and I was red going to be stranded so I had to get back down, scary I can tell u and I thought for sure it wasn't going to end well.
I made it back to the bottom and after my right cv pulled out the diff and losing my rear bar and flares,
I contacted Runva regarding this as the winch is still under warranty, I also removed the control box cover to find why it wasn't working. To my amazement the red a blue terminal leads are hard up against each other which eventually wore through and shorted out. As far as I'm concerned it's a manufacturer problem and there is no other way to have them in the box( btw I never connected that end as the control his was already done in the box new)
My reply from Runva is as follows
    Adam,

Under basic winch maintenance in the manual it says to check all electrical connections regularly to make sure they are clean and tight.

You will need to replace the control box + wires which we are able to supply for $100.00 inc GST & delivery to help you out.

    Absolutely load of bullshit
If some one can tell me how to upload photos I will gladly show the problem
If you buy a winch from them after reading this and u get stuck , u will only have yourself to blame

I might be in the same boat - I bought a Runva 11XP winch and fitted it in September.

I went to test it earlier this week before heading off into the Victorian High Country and found it doesn't work properly.

The wireless remote makes soft clicking sounds in the control box.

The wired remote would spool the winch out but not in - not exactly useful. I rang Runva and they said if I swapped red/yellow the winch would work the other direction. As I'm away I did that - so at least I could winch myself up something now. When I get back I'll have to pull the whole thing apart to get to the control box.

    Not impressed...

Interesting. These are the first negative comments i've seen on the Runva's. I searched long and hard when deciding on a winch and the Runva was my choice coming up trumps. It's been used in anger a couple of times now getting me out of the poo and has performed extremely well..
As Runva mentioned, as part of regular maintenance, check cable connections etc and to date everything has been OK with mine but I can see how with some movement of the cable lugs if not tightened or installed correctly, serious damage could occur.

We had a warn 12000 on my 80 series. It performed well up to the time it didn't turn off when winching the last 2 meters up Palm Creek with trailer.
After many hours of pulling apart and testing found the thermal break wire was shorting out on the brush it was mounted to creating its own circuit power supply. Now this is fun when it happens (not). When i approached warn they said ' this has never happened before'. The fix was easy enough when i got home but the temp fix was to remove the green wire (thermal break) and connect to effectively remove the thermal break.

I wrote a post on there fb page and they deleted it quickly, how do I attach a photo to show people the problem.
Runva continues to say it's my problem and won't cover it under warranty. Once people see the photo then it is easy to understand the problem

Here's mine. Very similar with little or no segregation from shorting.

Mate yours looks new and unused. I would recommend cutting the metal to give more room and repositioning the cable off the nut before u get stuck like me and Runva won't stick to their 5 yr electrical warranty. That unless you work for them as I suspect

That pic was at time of install. I'll open her up this weekend and revisit the cabling...

Update, finally got Runva to come around after me being the biggest pest I can be, they sent me a new control box , replaced but the winch isn't working, the motor has burnt out. So now I'm waiting on a new motor from them which has to come from China, my opinion is a new winch should be supplied. Serious regrets of purchasing one of these , I should of not been a tight ass a bought a decent winch. Started the repairs on my rig , it's tallying up to a fair bit.broken rear bar and both flares drivers cv , brake line, ball joint , sway bar link , diff mount .. All this for a cheap winch which failed

                              By the way, great share!
That set up looks pretty stupid & you have the evidence.
