Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

What rubber trim are you talking about?
    here is what i meant

    http://postimage.org/image/2jdgpi65g/

You went a bit quiet for a while so wasn't sure what your decision was
    .
i had to think if i'm going to need a roof rack , so it took me some time to make up my decision, also i was waiting to know the price of the ARB & Rhino roof rack first, and i decided to go for the Hd bars
I was going to suggest that if you needed the extra HD bars, I can help to get the long length and cut it in half (as well as the Unistrut parts) and take it to Toyota so that they can put them in the same box as the roof racks to save on postage.[/quote
thanks for the offer, although i don't think that i could save on the postage , (i paid A$ 157 for the bars) i hold you to your kind offer as this was somthing would be a great help for me, even get the same bars you have and call it the Andrew Design. but this will be later in acouple of months.

    regards

Best bet is to contact Rhino Rack Australia and order the feet as spare parts. They may have just the feet and hardware as a set.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

i just installed my Toyota HD bars , and new roof rubber trim (i had 3 parts missing), very easy DIY , looks great , and now its time to think what will do with them.

i have 1 question, i noticed there is gap between the legbase(mounting pad) and the roof about 1-2mm tried to take a pic but it is not clear
            is this normal?
the instructions stated to torque the screws at 4 N/M ,but i couldn't becouse i didn't find a torque rench that would take the security allenkey supplied with the kit.

                Yes they'll fit no problems.

Howdy again. Armed with allthe good information from this forum, I visited my local 4x4 shop to price a Rhino tray for the 08 Prado GX. The bloke said the maximum recommended tray is the AT1800, i.e. 1800MM x 1010mm. It seems relatively small, so whats everyones thoughts on the best tray. I need to be able to carry a spare wheel, at least 2 or 3 jerry cans and a small generator. Mark

AT1810 is the appropriate size as the front to rear bars are roughly 1500 apart. Also the HD cross bars are 1250mm in length. You could get longer bars like a 1350mm but you won't be getting the cheap prices you would get if you bought the standard HD cross bars from Toyota.

If you want to go larger, there is the Windcheetah which can be had up to 2400mm in length but I think that is way too long. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5538&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I have 2m long HD bars perpendicular to the cross bars and that is a tad too long already. --> viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6773#p100853

Also consider the Pioneer alloy platform 42102 which was designed specifically for the Prado. It is 1928x1236mm. You will need a leg kit, i.e. the HD set from toyota without the crossbars. From my previous calculations, it works out more cost effective if you bought the HD bar set from Toyota and use just the legs and feet from the set than to buy a leg kit from Rhino. This way, if you do not wish to use the platform, you can mount the cross bars instead.

                    See here --> viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10135&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I do like the Rhino design in that 6 screws is all that is required to get the roof rack off, leaving the feet attached to the roof. Takes all of 10 minutes to remove the rack.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

Also consider that the Prado can only carry 100kg on the roof INCLUDING the roof racks. So...

                        Spare tyre 32kg
                        1 20L Jerry can 18kg
Platform rack/tray 25kg (Pioneer alloy platform)
                        Generator 15kg (Honda eu10i)
                        TOTAL 90kg

The diameter of a 265/70R17 tyre is about 800mm. You have more than 1m left for the jerry cans and generator, although I don't know how big your generator is, but assuming one of those small Honda ones, there should be plenty of room.

...and I thought it was just a matter of slapping a bit of metal on the roof and off we go. I also want to add a kangaroo jack and shovel.....a bit more weight.... I think I will go with the Pioneer alloy platform 42102 and HD leg kit from Toyota. Its a pity they dont have the areodynamic type...

Same until I got more serious in my reseaerch.

They look flexible in terms of tie down points. With the alloy tray, you have to tie back to the crossbars, but not so with the Pioneer. Just slip the eyebolt anywhere along the plank.
                            HD leg kit from Toyota.
I think you mean the HD bar set. Didn't want you to ring up Toyota chasing after just the leg kit as they don't do that. Also don't forget to ask for a 10% discount.

The HD bars aren't too bad. I don't really notice any change in my fuel consumption. Note that if you do get the aero bars later down the track, you will need an adaptor to put between it and the leg.

I recently had the pioneer alloy rack fitted to my GXL (2007 with factory rails) http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCa...ay_520_71.aspx even though the rack is made for vehicles with out rails the local TJM was able to make it fit. All up for the rack and 3 set hd feet fitted was $830

That is pretty much exactly the set up I'm after.

What size pioneer rack is that rabs?

Was $830 the price of the rack and the cross bars or just the rack and the mounting kit?
