  • TJM Temptation

    Hi All,

I have been looking around for a bullbar for my 2008 GXL and have got a series of prices. I was tossing up between the Dealer supplied Sovereign bar and an ARB Delux steel one. There is a wealth of information on the forum about the choice between the two so I am not trying to restart a thread on that. What happened today was though I rang TJM at O'connor to find out the prices of theirs as an option.

Well the prices were pretty much the same and I was going to cut them out of the equation until the sales person mentioned the special they have on until the end of January. If you get the type 15 bar in January you can choose an option to go with it.

Steel: A recovery kit or under bonnet compressor (fitted)
Alloy: A heavy duty duty recovery kit or a snorkel (fitted)

Now a snorkel is one of the the things that I have on my wish list and to get one for the same price and at the same time as the bullbar is very tempting. I have seen the post on the Airtech snorkel but I have not seen much comment on the TJM alloy bars. Does anyone have any thoughts on these bars good or bad?

    Cheers Neil

    Re: TJM Temptation

What sort of 4wd'ing are you doing? I ask because after seeing the damage a slight tap to a tree did to a mates truck I wont be going alloy when I get a bull bar.
Don't know what brand he has but it convinced me steel is the way to go up that end.
    Cheers, Leon

To add to my previous post... what I was getting at, but didn't make clear ops:
        ... was...

I don't think the value of a snorkel would justify changing to an alloy bar... especially when you had mentioned the ARB Delux steel bar was one of your choices.

As for ARB steel v's TJM steel with the compressor......... don't know :?
        Cheers, Leon

I was looking at the TJM today and thought the final build quality of thier steel bar was about 70% compared to the ARB quality. Visible joins, poor welding etc.
                  And yeah Fugly!

                      Re: TJM Temptation

I had a similiar dillema 6 moths back when I bought my PRADO.
As I intend to do a few outlback trips in future I know which bar type I'd rather have if you hit a Roo.
I had my prices from ARB when I asked for a quote from the Toyota Saleswoman just to compare that I wasn't getting charged extra to have it all done at vehicle pickup.
I couldn't believe it when I was quote nearly $400 less by the dealer and I scored the ARB Deluxe Winch Bar, when I only wanted the Deluxe version.
It was a big saving as the Dealership won't charge a fitting fee as they do at the ARB stores. I was also told that ARB reps come to the Dearlers Pre-Delivery Area and do all the fitting there.
The Deluxe Bar is great looking cosmetically, and best of all it gives the PRADO a really good approach angle.
Unlike the Soverign Alloy Bar you don't end up with a gap between the Bar End and the Front Bash plates.
If you can afford it.....go steel.

                      Regards

iron man ones are pretty good looking, they are very close to the ARB one (apparently the mounts are identical), they're steel (at the bottom) but the one thing that turned me off them (other than the crap service from opposite lock who didn't want to take my money) was that the loops are a separate piece (alloy too i think), bolted to the bar... so on impact, they could separate... and either let whatever you hit through or come through them self.... bit of propaganda there and could be seen as a positive in a light crash could just mean replacement loops rather than bar as a whole... but still enough to rule them out for me.

TJM didnt even get a lookin... at the time they only looked to have alloy... but recently I've seen colour coded or powder coated steal..... but their bars are still ugly!

I'm pretty sure snaga realised they did steel bars, he just had no comparisons between the two.

Anyway your not making things easy, my wife wants safety and good looks (that's why she married me, LMAO), or is that not going to happen?

Safety = steel over alloy , Good looks = ARB and sovereign over TJM and others?
We do intend to do some day 4WDing and the occasional overnighter but not the real serious outback stuff.
