  • how do you increase revs while winching??!

    Guys

Im about to install a TJM Ox 9500lbs winch. Just wondering - how do you who have winches make the D4D idle-up so the altenator can supply as much juice as possible when winching?

I have read the posts on the idle-up button and also have tried it at times and yes it does deactivate itself when above about 8degC ambient - so really not very useful in a winching situation.

I had thought the day when a piece of timber propped between the go pedal and the chair were over - but it may not be. I dont think its particularly safe to be sitting inside the vehicle, tapping the go pedal whilst winching so a better idea is needed for remotely activating the "idle-up".

Then again - is the car smart enough to detect an increase in electrical load and then compensate by automatically adjusting the idle to suit?

    Your thoughts/suggestions etc are welcome!

Yes I used to do this on the Mav via the hand throttle when winching or using the compressor, Prado doesn't have a hand throttle

I would think most of the current is going to be drawn from the battery not your alternator as the alternator is just trickle charging your battery, its the battery itself that has the hight current rating ie 700CCA (cold cranking amps) and under load your winch is gonna pull a few hundred amps to get you unstuck, hence the large cable straight from your positive battery post to your control pack then winch motor.

The other thing is if i'm winching by myself i rig everything up then i winch myelf whilst behind the wheel guiding the car out in low gear to miss tree's, rocks, other bogged cars, only downside is if a shackle or sling fails its coming at you, but i still prefer having control and having some bodywork/windows to stop stuff.

Any winch recovery should be done with at least 2 people. So in theory you shouldn't have a problem

1st inside the vehicle operating throttle, brakes, steering and be capable of controlling the vehicle if the cable breaks

2nd should be outside watching the cable uptake on the drum, wheel placement, clearance, potential cable abrasion and kink issues

Unless you are using a PTO or a Hydralic winch, an electric winch should be used in at least at a 1-2 ratio ON-OFF run - cool down cycle. The manual will specify these times, this serves two major purposes, 1 - to let the battery build up charge and 2 - to allow the winch to cool slightly.

After saying all of that, there are ways to self recover using a number of additional techniques. Last year I needed to do a 40 minute (winch time) in 1 hour by myself, without any additional throttle above idle in a D4D and had no problems. PS - I remove the std crap battery Toyota put in and replace it with a Yuasa Overlander 700CCA.

Re: how do you increase revs while winching??!

Erh, my last post does read a bit alph maleish - Sorry

The only reason I said that is the amount of times I have come across people stuck in the 4wds and the dad gets their 10 yr old son to drive while he winches, seems to be increasing. The scary thing is the dad really has NFI and probably wouldn't be able to control a reverse compression lockup but his kid who can't even reach the pedals properly is put incontrol of a 2+ton bit of metal. Better hope dads knots are up to scratch.

The other scary bit is often the recovery gear is subpar as they have "saved money" usng bunnings shackles and nylon ropes because their winch cable isn't long enough. A bit like watching Ably Mangles doing his desert crossing over the stockton sand dunes, except he only threw the dog out the window  \

One can only wait and offer help when everything goes to sh**

Here is a basic guide to winching... It's very basic but gives some good underlying knowledge.

Re: how do you increase revs while winching??!

yeah thats not a bad warn book, i had a mate get me one of the NTPFES (NT police fire emergency services) guide to winching 4wd'n etc, its got some wild stuff in it like using your winch and a cut tree frame to swing the front of the car over ditches etc and a heap of techniqes when you just cant reach that tree. best way is just go get bogged with mates/help and common sense.

Re: how do you increase revs while winching??!

Sounds like the NT police have copied the army 4wd book. A tripod setup is still used to negotiate trenches unless you drive a 6wd LRPV or a tank

I'd love to see someone dig one of the prado alloy rims into the ground as an anchor

Yeap best bet is get stuck with some mates and use your coldies in your fridge as bribes. Like the old carrot and donkey

I think I have the same thing.... I thought it was the WA police one though. I must pdf it and host it for others to download.

I thought the best idea is to reconnoiter the area BEFORE you get into a situation where you might get stuck - that is, don't get stuck in the first place!

Number 2 must observe from a safe distance. Use a hand held cb radio and talk to the driver issuing guidance and commands in a clear manner. Make a plan. The winch cable should be fitted with a damper. If the drum needs to be inspected then the vehicles should be immobilised, hand brakes on, wheels chocked if necessary, then slacken off the tension on the winch cable before inspecting drum and cable. Number 1 can easily operate the winch from inside the cab. Some people even raise the bonnet to act as a shield but if properly rated shackles, cable, straps, etc are used together with a damper then the chance of winch cable failure is quite slim. Use winch blocks to reduce effort. Check and double check. Don't run the winch for more than 5 minutes before allowing it to rest and checking all fixtures.
