    VK6....
Thought I'd take this topic from PM to Forum in case there's anyone else out there interested.

    G'day Bryce,

    Yes, it's the amateur IC-7000.

I mounted the remote head in the centre console forward of the gear shift (below the ashtray) I have removed the ashtray (it doesn't look all that bad removed) and it casts a nice green glow on the '7000's main panel.

I can reach the control head in this position while driving, although it's a bit of a stretch for the buttons on the left side. I shouldn't be fiddling too much with the radio while driving anyway. ops:

The remote head mounting bracket supplied by Icom Japan is an over-complicated waste of space (literally). I took it back for a refund. I ended up manufacturing my own bracket using aluminium plate and attached the standard remote head clip to it. I painted it matt black and it looks better than a bought one, even if I do say so myself. I am lucky in that I have a sheet metal bender and shear at work, made the job a snack.

The main unit is mounted under the driver's seat, with Velcro. Yes, that's right Velcro. It works much better than it sounds. I has not moved one millimetre since installation. In fact is it a pain in the arse to remove, it's stuck down that well. I have remote speaker also mounted under the seat - firing forward. This will do until a better idea comes up.

Antennas? I have a VHF/UHF on the roof. I found the coolest way of getting the co-ax up there without going through one of the doors. I'm so proud and haven't bothered bragging about this install until now.

I ran the cable through the firewall, into the chamber where the windscreen wiper mechanisms are and up into the channel along the edge of the windscreen. RG-58 fits perfectly in there. Have a look next time you are near your 120.

My 120 has roof rails, I mounted a 90° stainless steel bracket to the roof rail and mounted the antenna there. Nice and elevated and even has a bit of a ground plane although the antenna is ground independent.

HF Antenna? Now this is where things get a little tricky. I have mounted an Icom AH-4 within the spare wheel carrier on some home made brackets. Mounting the tuner in here keeps it out of harm's way, but also keeps the RF outside the vehicle.

I had an antenna mount made that mounts on the spare wheel carrier studs before the wheels goes on. Or to be more correct, it attaches to the spare via the two unused stud holes then the whole lot gets attached to the spare wheel carrier.

The HF antenna I use is a 9 foot stainless whip. The tuner matches this up on most bands, even the top end of 80 metres, although it isn't very efficient at that frequency.

I'll post some photos when I get time to look for them.

For everyone else who are thinking "what the hell are they talking about": The Icom IC-7000 is a HF/VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Transceiver. What's Amateur Radio :?: It's a hobby (yet another hobby of mine) where people use very complicated radio technology and equipment to talk, send video, send pictures, send data and all sorts of other stuff all around the world. All well before the internet was invented. In fact, Amateur Radio is probably the oldest electronic hobby in the world. I guess it could be described as a grown up and more serious version of CB radio, although the parallel is somewhat inaccurate.

    Photos to follow later,

Drew. (VK2AFL  my amateur radio callsign)

Thanks very much for the info Drew, i will have squiz where the RG58 will go. (in Perth at the mo but back to Tassie tomorrow).

I was thinking of putting the head for the 7000 up where the sunglasses holder is. I can't remember if it will fit properly or not?

I am have been looking at AH4's and whips. Can I ask where you got your whip from? They seem to be hard to get hold of here. There is a lot of talk about them on Eham from Radio Shack (Tandy) but no go here.

The mount on the rear is where I was thinking of as well. A new rear bar with carrier was on the cards so that will free up the original spot for all sorts of brackets!

    Look foward to the pics!

Stainless whips are manufactured by Benelec, check out their website. I also used one of their antenna bases, but they are a crap design and I will need to rebuild it soon.

      Cheers,

      Drew.

Ah ok yes, I have seen their whips. Which base did you use? I was looking at the derlin one. There is a plastic one and also a machined metal one thats a lot more expensive. I got a quote from a place in Adelaide for a kit that has the base, whip and spring for $149.00.
What did you use between the antenna and the AH4?

I have lots of questions, but there are not many people around who have done this install!!

        Thanks Bryce

I have the derlin one. The only decent part on it is the derlin. It is not all that well designed. The 1/2" thread screws out when you try to disconnect the antenna, moisture can get down inside and apparently the SO-239 centre conductor just pushes up against the brass thread.

I haven't had a chance to pull mine apart yet but my Uncle-in-law has one. He stripped it down and rebuilt it before an outback trip. He tapped a thread horizontally through the derlin and the brass and added a brass bolt, connecting the RF directly to this, leaving the SO-239 as a mounting mechanism only.

I think there are better bases out there, Outbacker (Terlin) sell one but it's very expensive.

What are the metal ones you are referring to? I can't find them on the Benelec website.

The RF connection to the tuner is done by using RG-58 with the braid disconnected. As you are probably aware, there is a lot of RF in this section as it forms part of the matched antenna, so whatever you use needs to be well insulated. I figured good quality RG-58 with a floating braid would be good enough, and it works. Some others use special silicon insulated HF feedline, although it's hard to find at a reasonable price.

I'm going to give my interior a clean today, so I'll take a couple of photos of my installation and post them up here.

          Cheers,

          Drew.

Well I can't find the site where the metal base is listed. It has a picture of it next to the derlin one. I will keep looking. :?

I did find a base on the bushcomm website which looks ok. It has the connectoer on the bottom which looks to make it bit stronger.

Pulled the spare wheel off today and had a look. that looks like a great place for an AH4. does it fit ok?

You are spot on about the RG58 fitting up the rail! Will make for a great install. I have normal roof bars(across roof) and a bracket in the middle will be just the thing.

When you said you removed the ashtray, did you take out the cig lighter as well, or did the bracket you made just come out from the tray area of the ashtray?

Looks like a fairly strong unit. Does not seem to appear on the Benelec site though..

I mounted the control head on the deck of the centre console, forward of the gear shift/transfer lever. The ashtray didn't need to be removed, I just removed it to provide floodlighting for the control head. The same thing could be done with green LEDs I guess.

I didn't get a chance to take photos on the weekend, flying Saturday and domestic chores Sunday left little time for playing with the 120. I'll try and get some photos together soon.

The AH-4 just fits inside the spare wheel carrier, with a small spacer block added under the carrier mounts, similar to what others have done for their larger spare tyres. I do have some photos somewhere of this I will post later.

I wonder how heavy duty that metal base is. It would want to be better than the derlin one.

                Cheers,

                Drew.

Been out in the shed tinkering and have measuered up the sunnies holder and the faceplate of the IC. I think it will fit but will be quite tight. Should not be too hard to mount up either.

Have been looking for places to mount the main body but have not yet worked anything out.

Still looking into mounts for the HF. You said yours is a bracket from behind the tyre? Not much room there for it to come out?

Trying to find someone here in Hobart who would stock some of these mounts but having no luck...

Cool will give them a try. Not having any luck in Hobart but might be able to track one down in Perth next week.

Now to find a cheap AH4...

My mount is custom made. It uses 50mm square aluminium tube, if you look at the space in the centre of the spare hub you will see that a 50mm square will easily fit through there. The only snag with my design is that you have to remove the mount from the centre of the wheel before you use it as a spare.

I hope this photo shows enough detail for you. I haven't had time to upload any better photos, or take some photos of the installation. I'm on late shift next week so that might give me a chance then.

                        Cheers,

Ah yes I see. I have seen similar setups. Still not sure which way to go but there is no huury.
Might wait till i find out about a new rear bumper and tyre carrier then do a mount to the inside of of the spare.
Would still like to see pics of your head unit and the AH4 if you get a chance.

Here's a photo of the 120's dash and console to give you a bit of an idea - I still haven't bothered finding my installation photos - maybe this weekend (my first weekend at home for ages apart from flying on Saturday)
