  • Adhesive vs drilling for UHF mic holder / mount

I've tried searching through the posts about how people secure their UHF mic holders without drilling holes in the dash. I had an ICOM 440 installed by ARB recently though they left the mic holder to me.

I went through to our local 3M stockist to find out what adhesives could hold the mic holder to the dash. The guy at the store had tried various adhesives for his mate's Landcruiser for exactly the same purpose and said none of them withstood the weight of the mic coupled with the heat and vibration. I can see on the forum that some have made their own innovative brackets which avoid the need to drill holes. For those of us who aren't so deft, can anyone suggest any other methods (especially the adhesive methods ) that have worked ? I note Pedro's post about velcro, but that was for a reversing camera which doesn't get moved as much a mic.

If I did decide to go through with drilling the dash for the mic holder with the self tapping screws, which of the different types of plastics on the dash would be best ? and which would be best left untouched ?

    Any help much appreciated.

I've got GME 3440 with the controls on the hand piece, I'm not sure how the weight of the GME mic compares to the Icom but I've just got my bracket stuck on with 3M removable picture hanging tape. It has stayed in place for the last two years and seen plenty of badly corrogated roads and heat.

Same here, a TX3440 mic holder stuck to the dash with some heavy duty double sided tape I picked up at the hardware. It's clear tape as well, so you can hardly see it. Has not moved a millimetre and could be removed with a bit of fishing line and some metho or something when the time comes.

      Cheers,

There should be a mic holder and another section that screws into it with a flat base. I just added double sided automotive tape to the flat base. Hasn't moved in a year.

I have a phone holder that sticks to the front windscreen ( suction ) much like the type used with many GPS's I bought it from supercheap auto works a treat . It comes with two types of attachments one to hold phone and another type which i used to fix the mic holder to .It then attches to the stem then to windscreen . It works for me as i only put the mic in when goinf away . I have the GME with the controls on mic so great visabilaty. will take some pic's and post in the next few days. cheers

Re: Adhesive vs drilling for UHF mic holder / mount

Fishnut came up with a brilliant idea which I "borrowed" and that was to make a bracket that fits around the plastic trim in the centre console.

Don't recall where Fishnut has this but I think its a Thread called No Holes UHF Install or similar. I posted my install:
                  GMX TX3420 Install
About halfway down. I've created a new bracket since then and located on the other side. Built a new bracket the same way for a 4.3 GPS mount but it sucked so now I click the handheld UHF onto the right hand side.

i just pulled the silver plastic cover off (that sits over airvent) and screwed my bracket into the actual dash, and then replaced the cover, it is really neat and sits perfect, and if i ever want to remove it there will be no marks at all to see..

Re: Adhesive vs drilling for UHF mic holder / mount

i tend to fit ALOT of radio gear to land cruisers and prado's and one thing i have found that works well for no holes with mic brackets is the hole free brackets for mobile phone cradles. you remove the vent panel and it screws to the dash (so the actual holes are hidden) and then pop the vent back on.

but for mine, im probably going to be a bit brutal and drill a couple holes, but i probably wont have much choice with about 4 radio's and hands free kit going in. only had the car 1 week and havnt had much time to do anything with it yet. but i will post some pics when done.

That's basically the same thing that OldSalt did above but I believe his is an adhesive bracket since he then lists the website for Contact Communications.

i havent tried it but if have heard people rave about the yellow bluetack. some have said they used it to hold gps etc on top of dash and never moved in years. i am not sure about that but have been told its a lot stronger and "stickier" than the conventional stuff

I am sure mine is not as proffesh as some of the ideas floating around but I actually cable tied my mic holder to the front centre passenger air con vent which is where it sits most of the time. Suprisingly it doesnt cause any issues, vent still opens and shuts, moved up and down, my wife tends to turn the vents off most of the time. I just put the cable tie behind the centre post (if thats what you call it), created a circle and slid my mic holder in. No tack, no screws, looks good in mounted position, nice and high, sometimes a bitch to get mic in but when using reguarly sit on console anyway! Can take pics if anyones interested.
