I have a question for those who DIY install their Sovereign bar. I just bought a 2nd hand bar from Matt. He did not do the recall as he was changing to the ARB bar. The bar is now sitting at my parent's home in Castle Hill. I will be driving up there for Christmas.

So I rang Castle Hill Toyota to enquire if I can bring the bar in the back of the Prado and have them perform the recall and install it at the same time for a minimal fee. They tell me that it takes 2.5 hours to install a bar and the nominal time to do the recall is 1hr. So the charge is $250-300. I thought that this was a bit steep and tried to negotiate the price down a bit but they wouldn't budge. I offered a case of beer but they didn't bite.

They said that they have a special hoist for the recall where it holds onto the bar, disconnect from the vehicle, replace the brackets and reconnect to vehicle. This would certainly make things easier for them to perform the recall. However, they did say that if I brought the Prado in with the bar already installed, then it would be free of charge. I asked if all the fasteners gets renewed and the answer was yes.

This got me thinking... if I can put on the bar myself just enough to drive 3km from the house to the dealer, would it be possible? I've read the instructions but currently don't have access to it.

Are there any bits that need trimming?
I know that the indicator/low beam light needs to be soldered onto the loom in the vehicle.
Installing the chassis pin requires the radiator to be swung out. Is this difficult/time consuming?
Is it worth me mucking around doing this or just pay them?

Nothing needs realy to be trimmed, I managed to fit the inner guards without cutting and held them in place with a few screws into the plactic end part of the bar.
I still havent wired up the indicators so I wouldnt worry about that.
The radiator just needs the lower bolts removed and the top two loosened a little to push radiator back 20 mm to get chassis pins in, takes about 15 min to do that.
takes about 40 min to remove the bumper there is a trick to get the plastic clips out on bumper where it meets just behind headlight.

hardest part of install is holding bar up to front of car to get bolts done up but a few mates takes care of that, I used what is called a genie lifter to lift bar into position on my own,sort of like a two wheel trolley with a winch driven fork lift setup.

all up took about 3 hours to fit up bar but if you arent to fussed about lining it up then may be done quicker.

I've got the overhead beams in the carport to hold the bar up. I've got dad to help me and maybe a Sydney Hills PP member [looks over at 1coolbanana ]
I'll look at the indicator wiring once I get back to Adelaide. Hopefully it doesn't require the removal of the bar to get access to the loom !!

Hi Folks,

I'm looking into fitting a second hand sovereign bar to my 120 and would appreciated a copy of the fitting instructions if someone has them to PM me.
Can I also use it as a check list to ensure all the fitting hardware is supplied?

Email sent Rolf, These instructions are for the original brackets not the new ones fitted on the recall. Just a hint dont cut any inner skirts untill bar is fitted and aligned up.
I found that following the instructions could lead to cutting off too much.
