  • Standard jack or not?

As a newcomer to the forum I have a silly question.
Looking at the standard jack I have doubts if it will be good enough in emergencies “outside the town”?
What other options do I have for a standard Prado?
An exhaust jack (would the back pressure cause any problems for the engine and its turbo??), high jack (where would be the points of lifting??) or do I stick to the one provided by the manufacturer?

i've often wondered what the best thing to do would be...

at this stage i carry a bit of timber with me to try spread the load out a bit more if i need to use it on a not so solid surface.. although i haven't had to yet..

Similar to McBain - I'm winging it with the standard jack, I've always managed to get by with the standard jack over the years. That said - I haven't played with it since the 50mm lift - but from memory it seems to have quite a decent throw.

If your Prado isn't modified - I can't see why the standard jack wouldn't do. Go off road and have a play with the jack and imagine what scenarios you might get yourself into.

      Good luck,

      Drew.

I too wing it with the standard jack usually. If I am going to be heroic I throw the highlift in the back and tie it down, I also have a plate for the base and a bumper lift attachment. The bumper lift attachment is used on the seams of the Sov bar, which is not recommended by Toyota, but I've done it a few times and got away with it. For the attachment to fit the Sov bar properly I had to replace the chain with a new piece one link longer. On the rear I slip it in the towbar recess.

          Guys, maybe I'm missing something?

I also have a 50mm lift, but that doesn't change the distance between the ground and the rear axle or lower wishbones on the front. And I understand that these are supposed to be the correct jacking points? So a standard bottle jack should still be OK after a lift. At least if you're just changing a tyre.

Granted, if you wanted to attach some sort of jack to the chassis (perhaps in a recovery effort), then a lift kit would make a difference - but then you'd look at a high lift and 50 mm extra is neither here nor there for one of those?

          Happy to be corrected....

I've got by with the Toyota jack so far and also carry a lump of 2 by 4 in case you pull up over a hollow or on soft ground.

          Cheers...Steve

Steve, you're spot on mate. No matter what the lift, the standard jack still fits under the same places. The only thing that would affect this is if you were to make a radical change in tyre diameter.

The only thing I've done done is made up a piece of 300x300x1 inch ply with a 1 inch "lip" all of the way around to give the standard jack a bigger footprint in sand or mud with the "lip" stopping it from sliding off.
It's not the destination..... it's the journey!

I use a piece of 250 x 400 x 45 Permapine leftover from a building job and have routed a 10mm deep depression to suit the base of the jack.
