  • Can genuine cargo barrier be removed?

I have just been at the dealer and was about to get a toyota barrier installed when the service manager told me that the toyota barrier cannot be removed once installed. Has anyone experienced this? What about a Milford barrier instead or some other? How useable is the third row with a barrier installed? or is this advised against?

G'day Drummo and welcome to PradoPoint.

I have the genuine cargo barrier and it is removable. I wouldn't have purchased it otherwise. It's a bit of a bitch to get out but it's do-able. It can also be moved forward and re-attached so you can fold the seats up - very handy feature. For what it's worth my barrier is genuine Toyota Australia, made in Blacktown, NSW, and mine was purchased new with the car in January 2006.

Sounds like the service manager doesn't know his products very well, which wouldn't be all that surprising. I picked up some Toyota oil for my 120 the other day and the fella behind the spare counter came back with some of the oil for the older engines (thicker stuff). I said the engine is a VVT-i and that's not the right oil. He argued with me, his boss came out and fixed it up with the right oil. So it seems good technical knowledge isn't a prerequisite these days (as with most industries, been into Dick Smith lately?)

    Cheers,

    Drew.

Thanks Drew, yes it seemed a bit odd that it wasn't removeable. And yes i have had vague and sometimes incorrect advice from numerous dealers over the years! Does it anchor to existing points or is there any drilling required?

        The silly b*stards!

Imagine if you didn't know any better and stuffed up your engine (or at least created some dramas) just because some idiot should have known better.

This really riles me (if you hadn't already guessed)

I think there was another thread about this somewhere, but I couldn't be bothered looking.

The top anchors to brackets that are bolted on behind the grab handles on the roof in four places so it can be moved forward, the bottom looks like it is drilled into the bodywork. To accommodate moving the barrier forward there are long extensions that fold up at the bottom. Does this make sense?

Forgot to mention, I don't reckon the third row would be all that usable with the barrier installed.

Cargo barrier could be put in and taken out in 5 minutes flat...
The cargo barrier comes with fitting kit which get fitted to the car (mounting points) and it stays with the car (and not removable unless you
want to have holes in the car).
Toyota uses Milford cargo barrier with Toyota sticker on it . The
cargo barrier is fitted behind second row seats. You can't have
anyone on the third row seats while cargo barrier is installed (the are
a huge sticker on cargo barrier prohibiting doing so)...

Caddy Storage apparently make a cargo barrier that fits in two positions.
One behind second row and it then sits behind front when second row folded up.

Cost from memory just under $500.

Will be checking them out when I get my Prado.

I think these are the guys that make the Toyota barrier, I seem to remember the address. I will check it later.

Toyota barriers are made by Milford (unless it changed since last year).

I bought my 120 new in January 2006 and I ordered a cargo barrier with the vehicle. I just checked and it is a Caddy Storage brand, so I don't know what happened there, maybe Windsor Toyota source their own barriers. Bit strange given the customer specifically ordered (and paid for) genuine Toyota.

Oh well, I don't have any complaints about the barrier so far, it does the job I need it to.

So ignore all my ramblings on how the "genuine" barrier works because it appears mine might not be the same.

                          Cheers,

                          Drew.
