Finally ordered my 'bashy plate thingy' from ATS 4x4 in Geelong. Cost $99 plus courier costs. I know it should be a simple thing to make myself but too much to do and not enough hours left before our trip in 6 weeks.

I'll have to wait for the weekend to pop the OE pan off and take a pic for you. The missus has kidnapped by baby for a couple of days

              Chippy,

how did your radiator protection plate hold up on 'THE' trip. Curious as to whether the rubber and the big holes (don't go there gents... ) withstood the vibrations (I said no! don't even...)?

Last weekend, I really noticed how much the sovereign shakes around on the corrugations.

Not a worry in the slightest.

Even when I used the Prado as a snow plow at Eurong Beach (Fraser Island) it had no dramas. I thought I might have done some panel beating to it in the Blue Mountains but nothing has moved.

                  excellent!

so what sized holesaw did you use for which sized bolts... Any of those fancy pics you are so good at, or at least some details, measurements, etc. I am interested in how you put it on there and now it's tried and tested, I figure there's no need me re-inventing the wheel.

Had a stick attack the front end (bit smaller than the one that attacked the back end ops: ) - it ended up in those strange mesh covered air intakes, bt seeing the damage it did there scared me a bit.

                  Cheers,

                  Glenn

Geez, give me a job to do.

At my age I can't remember what I did this morning

I gotta give it a clean underneath tomorrow morning - so I'll whip the other plate off and take a pic or 3. I would go out and do it now except I don't have my floaties on

Now I am unsure as to whether I have installed mine correctly. I've got a ATS bash plate which came with four "slots" cut-out at the rear of the plate. Two slots match up with the bolts for factory bash/sump plate. The other two slots match up with threaded holes in the crossmember that the factory plate attaches to. I have bolted the plate at the two "extra spots" using M8 bolts and 30mm washers that cover the width of the cut-outs and again via the bolts for the factory plate. All four bolts are done up tight. I figured that as the bullbar and the bash plates are all attached to the chasis, there would be no problem doing them up tight. Now I am starting to think I should back them all off a bit.

                      What do others think?

                      Thanks - Byrnsie

As for the bigger holes and rubber spacers ....

... my bash plate is a home made jobbie and was based on limited knowledge of how the car works (notice how things don't change an awful lot). I wasn't sure whether there would be a lot of movement between the bar and the chassis / existing bash plates - so I mounted it to the bar with rubber washers.

My ally bashplate makes use of the two front bolts that secure the OE plate. In fact, my plate lays between the OE plate and the chassis and is pinned in place when the OE plate is bolted up. For this reason I used a holesaw to create much larger holes (around 20 - 25 mm) - - so that if there was any movement I had built in an margin.

There are two further, large holes, off centre and a little further back - where the transmission cooler pipe takes a short detour and is attached to the chassis via two brackets. I gave these holes plenty of clearance - as I didn't want anything messing with fairly fragile tranny fluid piping.

As it turns out there appears to be bugger all difference in movement between the bar and the chassis - as you would expect as the two are firmly bolted together - but I prefer to err on the side of caution.

McBain - As for tightening the bolts - I don't see that as a problem. Were you provided with any torque specs for fitting the unit ? I certainly don't see that you would want to leave it loose.

                          Hope this helps

                          Cheers

                              bash plate

The bash plate and bull bar are both mounted / bolted to the chassis and dont move. When you are in the car and see the bar " moving " its you and the body thats moving ,its mounted on rubber blocks, hope this helps guys.

Thanks Raydes. That was my first thought. I will keep mine done up tight.
