Plate Bracket Failure on MCC Bar

Not sure exactly how far our MCC bar has travelled, probably about 10,000km now.

The number plate bracket consists of a circle with three wheel stud holes, an angle out from the wheel then another angle to mount the number plate and LED number plate lamp to.

On a recent trip to the Flinders, the bracket failed completely. It was just by luck that I noticed it was hanging free by the wires or I would have lost the number plate and all.

I jury rigged the plate to the wheel with zip ties, and will contact MCC to see if there is a solution, can't imagine I am the first with this problem...

I spoke with MCC on the phone and sent them pics. They kindly offered to send out an updated design bracket at no charge!

It duly arrived in the post:

Instead of mounting on top of the wheel, the new bracket is now in two parts: The rear section mounts behind the wheel, and the number plate mounting section bolts to the prong that extends through the wheel. I guess it makes using the spare slightly more of a fiddle, pity they didn't arrange the layout of the bar to allow for the plate to be mounted on the bar itself. This side will definitely be second spare!

Given the design is what it is, my only other criticism is that the number plate section is made from about 3mm steel and weighs 630g - the wheel section only weighs 520g!

So we have a 630g mount (plus number plate and light) hanging out a minimum of 135mm on a piece of ~50mm x 3mm bracket. I reckon it will break again. I think the answer is to bend up a bit of aluminium for the number plate section to throw most of the weight away. For insurance, perhaps weld some webs to stiffen the wheel end of the bracket.

A+ to MCC for fast service, C- for bracket design... (that's an improvement from Z- for the first one)

I dont use mine so you could have had it. I screwed my plates directly to my Grande cover along with the light.

            Thanks for the offer MLC.

Given the bracket fell to pieces in short order, I'm hesitant to use the same type again. Will try the new style with an aluminium plate holder of some sort. At the moment, the plate is zip tied to the wheel and it will probably stay that way for a while due to laziness and boredom.
