  • Rattles that drive ya crazy

I have had this bloody rattle that has been driving me bonkers, ive had seats out and used about 20 packets of cable ties to find it and i had a win today, in a rattle seeking missing i removed the glovebox, kick panels, i opened the passenger front door a little to hard and there was that bloody noise, when the pillar took the weight of the fully open door it made the noise, with no access from the inside of the cab i had a look at removing the plastic inner guard, i slipped my hand up near the top door hinge and had a feel while i opened the door to its limit. the noise was there near the hinge so i pulled the front left guard off and found the source of the rattle, it turned out to be a broken spot weld and a crack in a brace from near the bonnet hinge support panel to the door pillar
    guard removed

this is what i found, you can see the crack and broken spot weld

i grabbed the welder and gave it a bit of glue and a lick of paint

and well what do ya no, rattle goooonnneee. happy has a pig in pooh now as i can drive now without it annoying the shit out of me. cheers samo

Had a BAD high frquency rattle / noise in dash area near radio. Sounded like a relay with bad connection. Drove me crazy all the way from Vic to Qld. Started to rip the dash trims out to access behind radio, then noticed the cables I disconnected from in-car mobile phone set located at foot level. Taped up nut section on aerial cable and replaced trims etc, went for a drive and noise gone.
Very surprised as to the sound appearing from radio area 2/3 rd metre away. Wife reconned it came from radio as well.
Glad I found it that easily as I was about to remove dash trims with a 4 lb lump hammer..........

Drive a 90 series Samo and the whole bloody dash rattles so no need to pin point anything lol. Both my 90's were shocking the later diesel been the worst. Only rattle in the 120 is when both the wife and I lean on the centre arm rest, gives me the shits. Its just the latch but havnt really had a good look at it. Certainly less rattles then the 90. What do you think was the cause of the crack in yours ?? Have seen the spot welds near the headlights come apart on the 120's on the passengers side but not a crack like yours. great you found it........Cheers Steve

funny you mention the centre console steve, mine does the same thing, latch rattles blah blah, so im gunna get some foam and make a seal and glue it to the inside of the lid to put a but of upwards pressure on the latch, that should fix it i hope, if not more cable ties lol, as to what caused the spot weld to let go im not sure, i have none on the so called inner guard cracks so anyones guess is as good as mine, in the end its gone back to a pleasure to drive then ahhh whens that rattle gunna go away. cheers samo

Hey Samo, was the sound more of a tap tap like someone sending morse code. That's a noise I'm getting around where the A pillar meets the dash on the passenger side so I could have a similar problem to yours. Smooth roads and the tap gods give me respite.

I was going to start with removing the A pillar cover and have a look behind there first. If I have to move onto the outer guard do you reckon I could see or feel the broken weld first by just removing the plastic wheel guard. I have an inspection camera to poke around with.

hey wastegate, its a hard sound to describe but the noise sounded like it was comming from up near the pillar somewhere, i removed the a pillar cover and the glovebox just to eliminate a few things and took it for a drive and it was still there, i then pulled the plastic inner guard liner out and had a look up there and couldld see much, but if i had a camera like you had i might have made a big difference, removing the plastic guard liner is not hard but the clips that hold it there are a absolute bugger, i would go and order atr least about 8 of them before you atempt this but just went gun ho and used the side cutters to get them off. the guard is not that hard to remove, about 8 bolts or so, but the silence after is great. cheers samo

I said that once to my wife slackdog, we had passengers in the back seat one night. One was asking about safety features in the vehicle as they were looking at getting similiar vehicle. They asked me how many airbags did it have, I said one on the drivers side and the occasional one on the passengers. Took the wife a few seconds to realize what I said. Shit I had a sore arm for a while lol (it wasnt the prado at the time) mmm thinking about it now, maybe it was my driving and they were a bit concerned lol.....Cheers Steve
