  • I have recently bought some Outback Ideas recovery points and was wondering if anyone can tell me how Toyota have re-fitted yours with the new bull bar mounts as they use the same bottom holes. Any photos or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (I have searched for this issue but can't find anything - please direct me if there is already a post.)

    Cheers

      • Thanks Peter Pilot. For some reason when I opened the thread initially I couldn't see the photos. Those photos by Chippy show that it is the same mounting bracket on the bottom hole as the new bullbar bracket is. Just thought that the recovery point bracket might be flush the whole way where you are mounting it to. (i.e.the part of the chassis)

        Is that confusing or what?....

        Thanks again

        • Hi all, what's the latest on recovery points on the 120?

Are the Roadrunner Offroad points the same as the OI ones?
They have an ebay store with the recovery points for $89.00 delivered.

For those that prefer yellow to red or orange. Why can't they just powder coat them black?

              • Redlands 4X4 (in SEQ) have the kit for $140.00'ish and will soon be stocking them for the Prado's... currently an ordered item.
Trouble is... my stupid Powerful4X4 bullbar will mean I need to put them on backwards, not sure if I want to do that

                • Long time reader, first time poster LOL.

Today I had a suspension lift, bash plates, snorkel and recovery points installed by a local 4wd store.

I have the sovereign bullbar so the mount of that uses the same bolt as the bottom of the recovery points, this leaves a gap between the points and the chassis at the top bolt. They have not packed this gap except for a very thin washer which seems completely redundant. Does this need to be packed so the top bolt can be tensioned properly. On one side I could actually move the point a few mm by hand, pivoting on the bottom bolt.

This picture is from under the car looking towards the front of the car.

I'm a bit dissappointed with the install altogether. They failed to resecure the plastic guards they had to undo to do the recovery points. I had to go buy screws to reattach them properly. And i'm not 100% sure the snorkel is installed correctly as the car does not stall when I block the head of the snorkel with a bag, although I will get a 2nd opinion on that as I may be missing something. I discovered all this after getting the car home this afternoon so have not had a chance to talk to them. If it is simple to fix I would rather just do it myself.

                  • Yeah man. Two 1/2 galv washers will fill the gap. You may have to flatten off one side to clear the bullbar mount. Anyone can see that it's required. They should have taken the extra two minutes with all of that other work you had done. Easy to fix yourself though.

                    • I know this has been talked to death but I have just gone through the installation process of fitting "rated " recovery points.

I have asked the supplier to get a hold of the design calcs for this system. The way in which it attached to the chassis is of major concern. The long bolt that goes through the open chassis box will crush the chassis rail when tightened up. It should have a crush tube inserted in the rail through which the long bolt is torqued, otherwise the bolt is little better than finger tight. If the recovery point were to be side loaded, i.e. a torque pulling the point towards the centre line of the car (when using an equalising strap for example) , the inside of the chassis rail could distort as it is unsupported, hence the crush tube.

There were a number of other issues, a torque of 158 ft/lbs was quoted when Toyota suggest around 56 ft/lbs. The two short bolts were 12.9 high tensile bolts, a high surface hardness. They are not supposed to be used with lock washers only loctite! Bit of problem getting them out! No packer for the soverign bar and ....no instructions!

Looking at the Toyota tow points, my 2008 Prado has them welded through the chassis rail, not underneath. If one is rated to tow the vehicle, I would have thought that two with an equalising strap should be sufficient for snatching, any thoughts? Has anyone asked Toyota?

                      • Yes it has been done to death and these questions have been answered many times before, but here we go again.

As for not being able to tension the top bolt properly I agree, There is a way to do it so they can be fully tensioned, have a look at post #156 in my rig build, It is a differnet recovery point but the process is the same and I used this system with a similar recovery point to the ones you are looking at on both my Prado's.

As for the OE tie down points, they are welded, no 2 welds are the same so therefore no one can say whether yours are suitable or not without seeing and inspecting the welds. Thats the crux of the issue, some might be fine, but others may not. I have seen some of these loops with welds that are incomplete or not penetrated onto both pieces of steel.

With the bolt on recovery points at least everything is of a known quality. Use a bridal (I would do this on any vehicle for any major recovery) as it will spread the load and reduce the risk.

If you asked 10 different people at 10 different Toyota dealers whether they are suitable or not you are likely to get 10 different answers. Most people that work at these places don't have have a thorough understanding of recoveries and what is involved.

                        Cheers Andrew

                        • Moving the discussion of 120 series front recovery points with an ARB bar to the correct forum.

After Smakb's suggestion of looking at the FJ Cruiser/150 recovery points for the 120 I happened to be driving past Ultimate 4WD today so went in for a chat.

Firstly, why do these salesmen insist on treating potential customers as idiots?

They told me that the 120 recovery points they sold would definitely fit with the ARB bar fitted. I politely explained why they wouldn't but they knew best and stated the supplier had a 120 and showed me a photograph of his 120 with recovery points fitted. I pointed out that he had the Sovereign bar but that didn't deter them, they still insisted they would fit.

I rang their supplier and he confirmed the 120 recovery points wouldn't fit despite what they were saying (what a surprise) but he did go on to say that the FJ/150 ones would. They do seem rather expensive at $199 a pair though.

                          Smakb recommended Everything4WD:

                          http://everything4wd.com.au/ProductD...Code=RP-PRA150

At $145 (postage free) they seem better value. From the look of them they should fit though.

                            • They seem to have 3 holes in those 150 recovery points, I can't see how you could use more than 2 of them in the 120. I imagine they would also hang fairly low.

If they did fit it would make life easy in the recovery point debate, they are marked, so therefore rated, and if they fit with the ARB bar I imagine they would fit with most others as well.

Let us know how you go Trekkie, if it bums out I am sure a WA 150 owner would take them off your hands.

I saw the three holes and wondered if the two on the end were to allow fitting on different vehicles - Is the 150 different to the FJ?

They do look to hang lower but I don't think that should be a drama.

I might give Everthing4WD a call first to see what they say plus I want to have a closer look on the Prado before I commit.
