  • Cant open rear door

    Just back from the Simpson and had the truck cleaned inside and out and now I can't open the rear door.

    I was having a few issues in Alice Springs but I was still able to get it opened ok. I wasn't to keen on pulling the lock apart just incase it got locked.

    I have tried the push door and then unlock method but I can't get any forward movement on the door.

    My biggest issue is the drawers and barrier that make it difficult top get access to the door from inside. Next step will be to remove the barrier from the back seat side and then try and open the door from there.

    Any suggestions?

    Does door handle open? Assuming it does I seem to recall an issue with the welds
    breaking near the hinge letting the door drop. You could try lifting the door as you
    open it and see if that helps?

      Has your lock and handle seized up with dust/bulldust build-up from the trip, can you get a hose it to clear it out/check?

        I think that dust had started the problem but now the handle dosen't seem to engage the unlocking mechanism at all.
        Its like something has come undone inside the door.

        I am off to Toyota now to see if they can help at all.

          I had a similar thing happen to my 105 cruiser. The handle wouldnt en gauge anything inside the door. Luckly I could get the bit the lock connected too off the body with an allen key (about 1/4 turn at a time). What had happened (and Im sure the prado is different) but the little plastic cup that joined the rod from the handle to the lock mechanism had broken. I ended up drilling a small hole in the rod and tie wired the thing together.

              Next step is to remove the cargo barrier and to try and open the door from inside.

              The Toyota guy said it should open ok using the inside handle, it looks like the link from the outside handle to the lock has come adrift with all the vibrations on the various corrugations we have been driving over in the last three weeks.

              Very lucky that it failed after I had removed the fridge and all the camping gear in the back after getting home and not in the middle of the Simpson with the cold beer locked inside!

                Maybe try hooks and poles through the cargo barrier to get to the rear door handle. I'd imagine it would be quite painful to try and remove the cargo barrier.

                  My Playdoh did the same thing after a stretch of the Binns track. I ended up using the air compressor to blow as much dust out of the lock and around the handle that pulls out. I also got a can of silicon spray lubricant into it and it started working....Works much better now....

                    Ok we now have the door open care of No 1 son Andrew and a can of WD40.

                    He soaked the lock from the outside and about half an hour later the door opened.

                    However before that we had removed the cargo barrier and half the drawer system then worked on trying to open the door from the inside without success.
                    We pushed and pulled trying to get things worked but to no avail.

                    I reckoned that the lock was stuffed and was planning for a return trip top Toyota to see what they could do when I walked back outside to see the door open.

                    Next step will be to remove the door skin and get all the dust out and then coat everything with a silicon spray.

                      We had the same problem when we were out in the corner country. With cargo barrier draw system and fridge blocking access to the inside handle, things didn't look good.
                      We had to keep hitting the door (with the palm of my hand) from the top to the bottom while trying to open the door, worked most of the time, but was getting worse. Got out the compressor blow out what we could of the dust didn't want to use wd40 or silicon spray as we still had a lot of dirt roads to cover and thought that would just make everything stick and make it worse. One of our other guys had graphite powder for there zipper for there camper, a few puffs of that work a treat have not touched it since and its still going strong 12 month later.

                        Mine had a similar problem on the way back from the cape , my lock jammed open and would not catch closed , washed and blew the dust out of it when I got home and it was fine , thought I was going to have to buy a new lock mechanism , but didn't . Still had to do 2000ks with the rear door ocky strapped shut .
                        03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !
