  • Replacing Rear Quarter Wheel Arch Flare.

    Hi All

Whilst reversing up a hill on a single track I hit a fallen blacken tree in near dark! Anyway the damage was to the bumper and rear quarter plastic panel damaging the screw and bung plug surrounds with a slight dent after poping it out. I think plastic welding is required or buy new panels.

If anyone is interested this is what they cost for an '08 GXL, unpainted:

    Rear Plastic Bumper $470
    Rear Plastic Quarter Panel $467
    Rear Mud Flap $51

So what I would like to know is, has anyone removed/replaced the rear quarter wheel arch flare? I'd like to know if it's just 2 x plastic bung plugs on the wheel arch and the 2 x screws towards the rear bumper attaching it to the body and I'm assuming the actual arch component is stuck on via double sided tape, would I be correct in assuming this?

Thinking about replacing or removing these parts myself for the panel beater or new panels. Maybe a good excuse to get the kaymar instead???

    Thanks

    Nick

I am not sure about the GXL but if it is the same as the Grande it has roughly 6 plugs across the top of the arch that clip into the flare and then into the body work. Then there are the couple of black plugs you can see on the underside of the flare. All of the plugs holding the flare are colour coded and have different shapes to match the angle that they attach to the body work and the side of the car. The plugs are a couple of dollars each from Toyota and a full set for an arch is around $30 from memory. If you want a picture of the plugs let me know.

Not sure how hard they are to replace as I damaged the couple near the front of the flare and was able to replace them without taking the whole flare off.

I got quoted a similar price but the flare was already painted to match. I seem to remember someone telling me at the time "If it isn't metal then you don't need it."

yes the flares just clip on.
easy job, just clean the area and refitter, but
there are 3 parts to the flare. clips, flare and seal.
the seal is what is on the upper edge and fills the line between panel and flare to look 1.
but it is an easy job to refit. can't get it wrong really.
GXL and Grande use these same parts.
      DIY time?

Same as VF4 but instead of reversing up a hill I reversed into a rubbish bin  ops: No questions on why I didn't use my reverse camera please  . On the damage front I didn't scratch or dent my rear quarter wheel arch flare but I did break the clip that looks like is plastic welded to the inside of the Flare. Question is am up for a new Flare or can I purchase a new clip that somehow can be reattached to the inside of the flare? The flare is clip back onto wheel arch but is not firmly on due to that one clip.

Re: Replacing Rear Quarter Wheel Arch Flare.

Come into a bit of lucky today, as I was going through my garage looking to see if I had some silcone to do a small job and I came across some Selleys Knead IT that I used a while back  . I then looked at the Prado and thought this might just work.....to repair the broken bracket on the flaring, actually there were three broken after close inspection, two were only broken on one side and the other one was completely off the flaring.

Picture of the tube of Knead IT

A couple of shots of the broken bracket that holds the clips and the clip its self

I cleaned the area before I applied the knead IT your can see the area about half way down

Bracket is back on the flaring and the other two that I repaired were top and bottom of the photo.

Finished shots and you can't see my misfortune

It took about one hour to cure (I left it alone for two). After two hours I tried to move them and I am pleased to say they were stucked on solid . I was out of pocket $7.00 (highway robbery from Toyota)for the one clip that didn't make it through the collision. Now I have to wait and see if it passes the test of time...

Re: Replacing Rear Quarter Wheel Arch Flare.

I had to repair my ripped off quarter panel last week.....

i too had the same idae with the sellys, but after some investigation and research found it to be not to friendly on the paint after a while..
instead i went to toyota and bought the kit to reattach panel ..60 bucks for full clip set and seal..

Looks like I missed that one  , I couldn't find anything to that effect when I checked to see if it will work .Its a bit late now but have you got a link to this information ?
Considering its inside the flaring, the painted surface is not a concern, but are you saying it will break down the painted surface and therefore lose the bonding to the bracket?

Re: Replacing Rear Quarter Wheel Arch Flare.

mate thats what i found out ..it will last for a while but slowly break down and come away for the arch..

i have the info at home and i am in PNG at the moment.....

can Pm it to you when i get back....

it didnt seem like a real issue , but thought it was easier to do it right the first time to save doing it again...

Pm the infor would be great, thanks..... but you are right Joey about doing it right the first time ,I just didn't realise there was a repair kit for these brackets. Its too late now to fix it right so I will be the test case on how long it will last...I hope I can get some money out of Selleys for this experiment 8) For the record, repair was conducted on 07/03/2009 @ approx 11.00am...so far so good.

Guys, can you please tell me how to remove the flare without damaging any of the clips etc on the inside. I need to fix a clip that broke off (closest to the door).

Do I just pull it away from the body or is there a certain skill/ method involved?
                      thanks.

I did a repair just recently and still looking good but to answer your question the only way I can see you removing the flare without further damage to the clips is you have to get behind the panel and sqeeze the clip end through the panel. If you try to force the flare off the wheel arch you will most certainly damage more clips. This is only my observation from when I damaged mine so I don't know if there is any quicker way of doing it . Hope this helps and maybe someone else can guide you to a quicker solution.

90 Series Rear Quarter Wheel Arch Flare

This is what it looked like after 8500km through central Australia!

Panel rattled off on corrugations between Flinders Ranges and the Barrier Highway (Broken Hill).

                          ALL the clips were busted!

I tried to pull the whole thing off with the aim of gluing some of the broken clips back on but this button style fixing was the last point and I could not remove without butchering it. (Why do they use these useless fixings! grrrr).

Glued the trim back on first.

Then just screwed underneath into the metal guard instead.

                            Looks ok from the side.

But from the top it's inelegant (but serviceable).

Cheaper than a new panel though.

Will have to do for now.

New panel and fitting would be $600+ which I can't justify for cosmetics!

Hi Krinkle. Remove rear bumper assy and this will expose fasteners for moulding. Take off clip towers from body. Rough up both clip towers and moulding where they meet to allow glue to key. Make up boxing on mouldings using insulation tape and after setting up towers in boxing, pour in 5 minute arraldite or similar product. Leave for a day or so to cure. Replace on car using new clips and double sided tape on top edge. Did mine a year ago and was cheap , looks good and has lasted the distance. Hope this helps. Cheers.
