  • Touch up paint

    Hi All

Has anyone used the touch up paint supplied with your new prado? I went to touch up a little chip and noticed you can't get the lid off!! You need to puncture it!! What gives? I hope my missis doesn't miss her tuperware!

Actually just this morning I used mine. It took a long time with a wide screwdriver but I got the lid off. Had to hit it back into shape to get the lid back on.

Funny... giving the 'touch up paint' a bit of a 'touch up'.

I found the touch up paint pretty thin. I 'borrowed' some cotton tips from the wife. The best result was from the cotton tips with a distinct point rather than the typical rounded edge version.

            Re: Touch up paint

So I called Mr.T today to get some touch up paint for my Silver 120 - no problems. Then I asked about getting some touch up paint for the grey that is inside the chrome grill and on the sills above the side steps - first he had no idea what I was talking about and then insisted that Mr. T does not provide any other touch up paint than for the main body colour!! I am not happy, my beastie has covered more than a few motorway miles before I took ownership and the paint in the grill is quite chipped. Are you guys down under able to get this grey paint?

            Thanks,

            Ian.

              Re: Touch up paint

I went to my local Toyota dealer ( well it is the same one BlackPradoChick is having all the problems with ) and asked about touch up paint. "No such thing" was the reply from the smarmy guy behind the counter.

So i got the paint colour code from the passengers pillar, went to Autobarn and the mixed me up 200ml tin for $20.

It'll last me forever and the colour match and metal effect is perfect.
              Cheers, Wayne

the grey on the grille and running boards is very difficult to get a code for, toyota can't/ won't help! toyota run a heap of trim codes, somthing like uca31. they will give you about 20 odd uca codes, and its your job to guess which one!!! for the model.
i'm working on this atm, when i get the code i'll post it here (btw uca31 is trim code for 100 series kakadu...)

Bah!! The smarmy Toyota guy strikes again! I swear to sweet bejeezuz that guy checks for when I make a booking and and makes a special effort to be there when I walk through the door and smarm his way around the place! No Sir! There's no possible way on this planet I, or anyone else in the building can answer your question or feels remotely interested in finding the answer for you! But you can have a pathetic cappuccino from the pathetic cappuccino machine! Grrrrr!

Cheers, that would be great. The bl**dy guy in parts suggested that my best option was a bodyshop!! So my comment to him was "So you cannot sell me paint for a car that you sell?" his answer was "No."

It's after sales attitude like this that reduced my empathy with the car companies when they started crying poor during the GFC.

Just like some of you, I got the paint code off the car and bought a bottle of Duplicolor, perfect match for my silver 1D4 paint code. As for the side steps, I too would be interested in knowing what the code is, I have a few scratches on my own.

                        Thanks.

I touched up the side steps not that long ago after I had a few good scratch marks aswell.
Fortunately I had a few cans of different grey that looked quite close to a match.
After a bit of experimenting on some card,....I think I went with Holden Gun Metal Grey.
The colour wasn't exact, but 99.5% pretty damn close, and you can't notice it.
Like any metallic paint, applying it is bit fiddly. You need to blend it over a much larger area of where you need to actually paint, then you should apply a top coat of clear.
LFaR saw my handy work last weekend and he couldn't pic it.

If your really keen, I can have another look at the cans I have over the next couple of days and do another spray test for you.

                          Cheers

                            Re: Touch up paint

spoke with my local dealer, and Toyota Australia again on this subject. neither could help. Toyota aust said it would be either 1d2 or 1d4. i know neither of these colours are gunna come within a bulls roar! ppg cant help either(my paint supplier) i'm going to try spies, dupont ect. does anyone know who the oem supplier of paint is? failing this, i will colour match it by eye, i can expect a 95% match edge to edge. if i match up enough, anyone interested in a small touch up bottle? nail polish size with brush. would expect cost to be around $15 delivered. no profit in that!!!!!!! will be in base coat too, so for the gloss effect, you would have to steal the old ladies clear nail polish and go over it.

Yep, I was definitely impressed. After seeing Stew's touch-up, it has me thinking about getting to this myself. I have quite a few scratches too.

Now there were some techniques Stewy mentioned to me. Already, he's mentioned blending it over a much larger area. I think Stewy, you also applied a clear coat too.

It would be good to learn a few more tips for novices. A step-by-step guide (if someone hasn't already been there done that) would be awesome. I'll have that to refer to when I get around to my own.
