  • Rust proofing?

We the family are taking the Tojo for a trip to Fraser. My 05 is still very shiny underneath and in the engine bay. I am not precious about keeping my car washed and sparkling but I would like to preserve the finish on the ally and gold passivated bolts etc for resale.
Is it worthwile to have the Prado rustproofed or is there enough protection there already. I dont believe in the Electronic Mumbo Jumbo rust prevention. I have read that they are fighting multiple law suits in the US and so the product has been dumped over here. Besides that electrolysis will only work if there is a complete circuit so the car would need to be totally immersed in salt water, like a steel boat is.
Is there a product that I can use and then wash off, say something like Lanotech or Inox for the engine bay? How about fish oil for chassis and under floor? I will be using the car wash at Rainbow beach when we get off the barge and I have seen the place where you can get an oilspray for the underbody but I dont think he will be open at 6:30am on a Sunday.

Interesting you say the electronic does not work. A friend has a Nissan Pootrol and has always had the electronic rust "protection" since new. I inspected it last month and it had plenty of surface rust underbody, but nothing serious. About what I would have expected if he had no protection. This is a real bugger because I have the same electronic unit. This brand does have a warranty which is why we chose it. My vehicle has no surface rusting underbody, but I do not have anywhere near as many trips as what my mate does.

I've had a few previous vehicles spray treated by "Rust Free". My latest though, by the dealer. Go for Rust Free, they really do a great job for a few hundred - money well spent.

The spray at Rainbow is recycled. So what is getting sprayed onto your wagon?

A family friend used to be the owner of 4WD Hire Service, here is his recipe. 1 part sump oil to 1 part diesel and spray liberally. then take a ride down a dirt road to "seal". This , however, is real messy. Can't park your car on the drive after that stuff.

None of this is going to wash off as per your query.

IMHO go for the pro's at Rust Free. When you get home from your trip, get under the vehicle with a hose and thoroughly hose out every nook and cranny. Do not use high pressure water blasters which will force water into places it should not be. Hope you have a great time at Fraser

Their is a place in Brissy i go to were they put your car on hoist and flush it out until the sand stops coming out, normally takes about 1.5 hours and 80-90 bucks but well worth while. They flush all of rails and hard to get to areas' and gurney underneath and in the engine bay.

        Rust proofing?

The last time I was at Rainbow I found a workshop that will do an underbody oil spray before you get on the ferry. I thinks it is called Rainbow Beach Rustproofing and Mechanical. They wont be open when Im there.

as for the guy with the Patrol, I rest my case. I have checked out the ERPS some time ago .When you read the fine print regarding warranty and installation you might as well just do your own rust proofing and all the other things you do to ward of rust etc because (I think) the warranty is void if you dont. Wont apply to second hand cars also.

i normally just run it up on some ramps and get under there with a hose...

I have the factory rust protection on my prado and i have noticed some suface rust appearing on my steel wheels (now alloys) as i have just bought a boat. i have been dosing my underbody with heavy duty lanolin and it seems to be working ok so far.

                Rust proofing?

We have just got back from Fraser (I will try to post some pics later). I sprayed lanotec all through the engine bay and over almost everything exept the intercooler fins. Turns out it is excellent at keeping water off everything and will not wash off. The downside is that it stays tacky and is now covered in sand. Everywhere. I will be getting out the degreaser gun tomorrow and removing the whole lot. Hopefully.
Secondly I used Waxoyl for all the chassis and undersides, gearbox, the whole lot. Used a mates 4 poster hoist. All the pommie car mags recommend Waxoyl to prevent rust and it does rain a bit there, salted roads etc. I sat the gallon can of it in the sun to warm it up and to help it flow better then sprayed it into every hole I could find, used a long hose on the end of the gun to get it right up the chassis rails and into the bottom of the doors. I pulled out the two bungs in the rear wheel arches and sprayed it inside the sills until it ran out, replaced these bungs and then resealed them with silicone. The Waxoyl stayed tacky for about three days and then finally hardened - the solvent smell also finally left the car, to my wifes relief.
Only time will tell if I've done the right thing and I've watched a car get a rust proofing treatment at a local smash repairers and I reckon I've done a better job than them.
Oh yeah, Want to buy a winch but the wife wont let you? Just get yourself "bogged" somewhere remote and then make the request. Worked for me!
