  • Water leak

Hi guys. I am struggling finding the source of the leak. For a while now I have had wet floor mats after rain. Prado point told me about the roofrack and the aircon and they are not leaking. I am sure. Now someone at work told me it is a common toyota problem. It is usually comming through a crack underneath the windshield, especially the corners. But you can only acces from the bottom. So, take the whole dashboard out.

he did seem to know what he was talking about and he did know exactly where it got wet in my car. Still, i would like to hear what you think before I start pulling it apart.

Nah it is a 2003 gxl 120 series.

i pulled the glove compartment out and had a look but I can’t see the leak. The fan housing is in the way. I am struggling here.

I guess just to check another thing off the list, you could check that the rubber bungs are in place under the car. There’s one on each side and they’re located underneath the backs of the front seats or thereabouts (access from under the car). About the dia of a tennis ball. When I bought my car one was missing & the other had been removed at some point and pushed back through the hole upside down, just sitting loose inside the space. Definitely an issue for water crossings, maybe not for rain though. Your floor carpets have a vinyl under coat so a wet bottom or top won’t pass through the carpet itself. Just worth a look though incase.

Thank you Brett that is something I will look into. I have dedicated this weekend to fixing this leak. I have talked to mechanics and panel beaters and they all say it could be a costly repair as they could spend hours chasing that leak. I’m gonna have to have a go myself before I do that. I will check the rubber bungs first.

Do you have cabling to a roof rack for lights or solar? I had a leak from the heater box and it was the cable to the roof rack on the left side of the screen - water was running down the cable above the heater fresh air inlet under the plastic scuttle panel.

Today I took out the cover underneath the windshield. The one where the wipers sit in. There was definitely a small crack in the body there. I poured 2 litres of water In that area and I am convinced that the problem or at least part of the problem was in there. Even though I still can’t see directly where the water leaks in when I stick my head under the dash. I siliconed it all shut and felt pretty good about it. Pretty optimistic. It rained tonight so we’ve had a look but unfortunately it is wet again. I am hoping it is wet from the water I poured earlier today and that it just takes a while before it saturates the felt. But I am afraid it is still not fixed.

my next plan is taking the side panel offS where the blinker sits. I don’t know how but maybe youtube can help. I don’t know what I’ll find but I am slowly running out of options. Taking everything out of the dash and removing all the felt is too much. I don’t trust that I’ll be able to put it back together. It is a big job

Don't know if this will help but I had problems years ago with an 80 series with water leaking into floor area of passenger side.
This is part of my attempt to find problem https://www.exploroz.com/forum/24395...vs-non-genuine
                https://www.exploroz.com/forum/24395...vs-non-genuine

Following that here is an extract of what solved it for me
Having fitted a new genuine rubber it continued to leak, and this had followed 2 replacement windscreens and numerous resealing by so called experts.

On trip to Broome we ran into a small shower at Barn Hill station and the leaking was still there.
Fortunately, it did not rain again until I was at Emerald in Queensland, and it started to rain again big time.
A minor flood resulted and I had to remove the plug in floor to let water out.
Went to local Toyota dealer but they could not help and referred me to local windscreen repair (Protector I think ).
Usual promise of I will fix it, which I had heard from every one of the previous repairers.
Said I was used to this but this guy said he had an 80 series and knew what to do.
After he had started he called me into workshop and showed me that there was no sealant on the underneath part of rubber at top of screen.
I said but that water does not run uphill and his reply was that" you would be surprised where it runs"
Anyway to cut a long story short I paid the $99 and have been through 8inches in one night and 28 inches over 3 days and not a sign of a leak.
So for what its worth check to see if yours is sealed on bottom side at the top.

I was thinking your windscreen has probably been replaced and the above might be your problem

Thanks Pedro. That is actually something ai have considered as well. There is some rust by my windshield and the panelbeater said that it could leak there. Or will leak there in the future so sooner or later the windscreen has to be refit anyway. Might ad well do it now and check if it is properly sealed and tick that off the list. I didn’t yet but bow I might after reading your story.

unfortunately i just had my car towed home because ai blew the head gasket. So, I have bigger problems now.
