  • RDA slotted discs and Bendix 4x4 Pads

Just thought I'd share with you my new discs and pads. They shit all over the genuine Toyota discs and pads I had on before.. Personally well worth the upgrade

Had a problem though! Didn't know you couldn't run the reservoir dry and now I can't get the brake peddle sorted.. It very soft but the pull up really well.

Heading to a brake place in the morning to see what I did and I'll keep you posted

Ok took it to a brake place this morning and they have advised that the master cylinder is rooted and letting air in causing all kinds of problems!

Has anyone had this problem and how much did it cost to fix??

On my old falcon if you bleed the master cylinder dry the piston inside would move too far forward and you would have to pull the cylinder apart to reseat it.

Is your master cylinder the type with the integral motor or the old stye that uses the engine vacuum pump?

The newer motor styles ones can be bled through if run try. I've done this before on my old car. I'm not sure of the prado setup by my old cylinder had two bleed screws on the side of the mastercylinder that also had to be bled. This fixed my problem after I'd run the reservior dry.

Just looking at my repair manual and it states (for a system with out VSC):

If the master cylinder has been disassembled or it the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the air from the master cylinder.

            1. Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder,

            2. Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it,

            3. block off the outer holes with your fingers, and release the brake pedal.

            4. Repeat 2 & 3 a few times.

If you have VSC take it to Toyota because you a special connector.

You may simply have air still in the master cyl although I would have thought the brake specialist would have bleed it .

It is possible to damage the m/cyl seals when bleeding your brakes though. If you push the brake pedal through its full stroke the seals can be damaged if there are any pit marks in the bore where the piston and seals normally don't reach.
Try bleeding your m/cyl this way before replacing it, you will need 2 people to do it.
Crack (loosen 1-2 turns) the brake lines at m/cyl, partially depress brake pedal - don't push pedal all the way to the floor.
Tighten brake lines before releasing pedal.
Pause then repeat several times till "solid" brake fluids flows from loosened brake lines.

Be aware that brake fluid WILL damage your paint, so cover lines with a rag to stop spray and flush very well with water immediately after bleeding.

If you have pits in the m/cyl bore this may allow the system to bleed however it will only be a matter of time before you will need to replace your mastercylinder.
When bleeding your brakes at the calipers I recommend only partially depressing the brake pedal for the same reason.

You are better of vacuum bleeding IMO.

Thanks heaps guys I've tried it all and still not good. Going to have to take it to a brake specialist as there must be something wrong and I'm out of ideas!

Used that much brake fluid bleeding the lines this weekend it's stupid ha ha

Leethal is spot on about not letting the pedal travel all the way to the floor when bleeding any part of the brake system. I have seen this kill master cylinders before when the piston travels past it's normal point in the bore and go through any crap at the end of the cylinder and damage the cups.
People think they need to slam the pedal to the floor to bleed the system. Pump the pedal a few times, crack nipple and go about 75% to floor and stop then close nipple, pump pedal and repeat.
