Re: Front Break Pads gone at 45,000 KM !!

    hi Guys

[quoteBrake pads are cheaper to replace than a worn out drive train, from using engine braking (personal opinion) ][/quote]

I agree My father was in the army and they did a test- brakes or gears.

Brakes was the most economical option.
I don't doubt that this is true, and in normal driving the brakes are fine most of the time but for extended down hill or steep conditions using the box is a must be it auto or manual. this is not a cost argument but a safety argument. coming from a background driving trucks if you ride the brakes they get hot and then fade and eventually fail. safe driving is cheap driving. also despite using the box for braking all of my life i have never had any problems with any gearbox ever, nor do i know anyone who has blown a gear box. i must admit in my teenage years though i might have had to replace a clutch or twelve but i think that was caused by something other than slowing down

just one last thought on the cost, i traded my last prado at 77k with 40% left on front pads and never touched the auto so maby using the box is in fact cheaper :?:

Re: Front Break Pads gone at 45,000 KM !!

      G'day,

Thats increadable! I just sold my 03 model ( auto V6) with 256,000K on it. I replaced all the disks once, machined them all twice, and only put two sets of pads on it. It still had 40 - 50% on the pads when it sold. It was my daily drive as well as my fun machine. My daily driving is mostly Hwy, but does have a lot of stop-starts, because of the traffic ( M5 ).
IMO, the reason why I get great pad & tyre life, is because I drive it like a manual. I drive smoothly, and always shift the auto down gears, when stopping and breaking. I think this makes a big difference.
I've been doing it for the last 6 years with the 03 model, and I hope the savings continue with my new 09 model.

You may need to look at your driving hadits/style.
      Regards,
      Bazza.

Re: Front Break Pads gone at 45,000 KM !!

Just had the 150,000 service done and was told 30% left on rears and may have to change fronts next service.
Was going to order the Bendix pads but had a look first, fronts have at least 30% left and didn't bother looking at the rears.
Pays to pull a wheel and check yourself.

I think Johna has hit the nail on the head right there with those 7 words.

Its the BLAT (Brake Late And Turn) racing that kills brakes (and causes accidents). Backing off and coasting to a stop may also help your fuel economy even slightly.

Guys - get your trucks to 2.6T and slow take-offs and slow stops/turns become a norm. You learn to live with it rather than fight it.

My BFGs are 2yrs old, 40,000 kms and still 50%+ wear left. I avg 12.5 l/100km and brake linings are still good - possibly 50% remaining. I regularly tow a 1.5T ski boat and camper - both have some form of braking system.
Easter-08 White GXL D4D Auto - delivered in near record time (5d) from placement of order. Has turned into a "Bermuda" or "Swiss fund" where $ get lost or converted into mods/accessories.

Can't relate to any of this, my 120,000 service details (brake report) shows front and back 8mm remaining, both sides. That is from new. I'm impressed!
