Well Well !! Now I am at 66,000 Km,s and guess what the new ones also are making noise .. after doing 21,000 kms ,... the same irritating screeching noise ... i have complained to Toyota as usual they say everything is hunky dory .. I have a feeling they didn't skim the discs properly as I am also having pulsating brakes whenever i break a little harder. and yes, that terrible screeching noise from the pads ..

it is making me crazy - i am yet to find a reliable mechanic outside who can check that out .. any suggestions !! Can the squeel from the pads related to lousy skimming work on the discs ?

    Regards

      Hi naukhez,
Yes incorrectly machined front discs will also give you the brake pulsation problem, also incorrectly adjusted or badly packed front wheel bearings will also cause this problem.

I just did a mates Toyota Hilux 4wd ute two months ago and he had the same problem.

You can jack up a front wheel and see if you can get any side ways movement out of it, though this is sometimes difficult as the brack pads tend to lessen the movement.

Last but not least you may have worn another set of front pads out and are hitting the "pad screamer plates" although I doubt it at 21,000km's but I do know you guys get to drive fast and brake hard over there

Sometimes a brake pad compound can cause screaming, if you remove the pads and rough up with a course cut file it sometimes cures screaming pads but not brake pedal pulsation.

I hope this helps a little

It could also depend on the hardness of the pad. My son has an evo 6 and has put racing pads in. It screams like no tomorrow and scares the living daylights out of pedestrians. My 1100 cruiser used to do the same thing. Nothing is touching, just hard/high temp brake pads.

hmm......hard or long life pads can tend to wear the disc more than "normal" pads.

Remember, pads are a consumable item - discs are as well but cost way more than pads so i would be going for normal not HD pads to maximise disc life.

I had a BA XR6-T once (as a lease car). I got very tired getting the hand brake renewed every 20-30,000 kms which i was told was pretty much "the norm" and involved new shoes etc. Seemed that they were always a on (you could hear them when driving slow and the windows down) and a known problem amongst Ford dealers.

The front rotors/discs were atrocious. I had them machined every 15k as they would surge/grip/pulse. Glad i no longer have that car (not to mention PULP at 18L/100km!!)

The pads on mine look like they will last for 100k or more , I think it's the stop start driving that is causing the wear ,mine mostly not used like that .
My current work vehicle (a Nissan Patrol 4.2 ) gives about 70 k per set with a constant 3.4 tonne tare driven hard on steep and twisty roads . Tyres only last 30 k . My previous work Troopy would go throught pads very 30 k (very small pad).
Always use the gearbox to assist in slowing (ever had total brake fade in a 3.4 tonne vehicle on a very steep hill ?) and have never had any need to rebuild a gear box even after 500 k .

Re: Front Break Pads gone at 45,000 KM !!

My boss and I have identical cars (except for colour) bought at same time. We had both our cars serviced this week (easier to arrange loan car). All brake pads were replaced. Mine was at 80,000, his at 50,000. Difference? He crawls to work in traffic, I sit on 80-100 most of the way. I do a lot of towing, he doesn't. You can therefore infer it's the traffic.

Re: Front Break Pads gone at 45,000 KM !!

I've just replaced my second set of front pads today. Got 74k out of the original Toyo pads and 55K out of the Bendix pads I replaced the originals with.
This time around I couldn't be bothered having the rotors machined again so I threw a pair of DBA slotted rotors on and a set of Bendix 4wd pads.
My initial thoughts are that they feel a lot stronger in stopping power but I haven't driven far enough to let them bed in a bit.
Keen to see how they feel after a couple of hundred km's of settling in.

I'm also keen to hear how this combo works. I haven't decided between DBA slotted rotors and either OE or Bendix pads.

$320.00 for the pair and the pads were $89.00.
The rears are just about due for their first change so I think I'll do the same combo as the fronts.

Thats why i like driving a manual. You can use the gears to slow you down providing you look past the end of the bonnet to see whats up ahead of you so you can anticipate what gear to go to.That will make your pads last longer (personal opinion).

                          Rob

Brake pads are cheaper to replace than a worn out drive train, from using engine braking (personal opinion)

I agree :!: My father was in the army and they did a test- brakes or gears. :?:

Brakes was the most economical option.

But then changing down gears with a good exhaust

                            Or should I say

                              Hi,
changed the front pads at 50k, the rear pads still going strong at 70k.
80% of my driving is stop start. I alway use ariginal pads in all my vehicles.
I think that's pretty good mileage fo a city car.....

Have 148,396 k's and still don't need replacing, and 98,000 k's of that was with a 2450 kg van behind. Tow at the speed limit but back off before brakes are needed (van pulls the speed back pretty quickly) and use the box downhill if needed, which isn't very often.
Not a slow driver either, was once stupid enough to get pulled up at 154 klm/per hr downhill, and was lucky enough to get a nice officer who only booked me for 130 k's, then wanred me to use the cruise control as a couple of his mates were further down the Newell hwy waiting for other idiots like I was at the time. ops:
