  • Brake controller Question

Hi all, I just bought a 2005 GXL Prado and it was advertised as having a electronic brake controller. I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find anything that looks like a control box. I think previous owner may have taken it out.

Did the 2005 come out with a factory fitted wire harness that is a plug and play? And if so where would the plug be located under the dash and what would it look like?

The Narva 7 pin plug at the tow point seems to have what looks like extra wiring spliced in, more than any of my other vehicles.

A brake controller would be obvious. Even the small redarc ones have a knob and led on te dash.
If its been advertised as having one then you should be contacting seller asking either where it is or to supply one.

They don't come standard with a Brake controller or a plug for one. If you have one and cant find it, then its probably a Redarc unit, so you have a knob anywhere that looks like this one?

Otherwise I guess it has been removed as you suspected as most others are pretty obvious.

Seller was a car yard in SA and I am in WA.

Only really just noticed now given that I have bought a camper trailer and Australian Standards require that I have a brake controller. No real drama as I'm happy to buy one and fit in a place I see fit but wondering am I wiring from scratch or is there a plug and play option given that it has a factory tow point fitted.

So any idea what the extra wires are that are spliced into the 7 pin?

I would still contact the car yard and ask them to pay for one. If there isn't one fitted

What colour is the extra wire? If its Blue then odds are its for a brake controller, if its not it may be a Power wire for accessories in a trailer.

If it had a brake controller that was removed chances are they left the wiring in place, have a look around under the dash for 4 wires, they should be black, white, read and blue for a brake controller. If you find a non genuine plug with that wire combination then you are likely on the money and you can check continuity to the trailer plug to determine if they are in fact the wires you are looking for.
