  • tcs issue after front wheel bearing change

Wasnt sure which sub forum to put this in?

my prado hasnt given me a days trouble, all the systems mentioned below have worked flawlessly everytime.

I recently changed the front wheel bearings on my 2003 prado 120 kzj manual, the job itself went smoothly and all genuine toyota parts used (bearings, seals). After assembly and first drive on a straight tar road the tcs light started flashing and the abs kicks in so the car cant really get out of 2nd gear although if I push the clutch in it rolls freely without any interference from the tcs.

what I have tried so far

    1. removed front abs sensors and checked them (looks fine)
    2. removed front abs cables to check for breaks and tested continuity (working)
    3. unplugged one of the front abs sensors and switched the ignition on, which causes the abs/vcs/handbrake dash lights to come on, if I drive the car now its fine just no abs and the dash lights but it drives perfectly.
    4. took it to toyota who after having the car for a couple of hours told me its the center diff actuator (rubbish), after hearing that just went to fetch the car again, then yesterday I activated the center diff just to test which locked the center diff BUT when I disenaged it the center diff light is now flashing!
    5. reset the dtcs by bridging 13,4 connectors on the obd plug, ignition on, and pressing the brake pedal 8 times (worked and abs/tcs/handbrake lights off but back to tcs issue).
    6. tried to do the zero point calibration which says it worked but made no difference to the tcs kicking in.
    7. redid the hub/bearing assembly from scratch, the only thing I didnt do was seperate the bearing assembly from the hub itself (still the same).

To me, I think one of the abs sensors is damaged somehow and its incorrectly reading and thus the tcs is kicking in but I am not 100% sure, any help at this point would be great. feel like a bit of an idiot.......

did you use the right wheel bearing assembly. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271053372...84.m1438.l2649
You can get one for abs and one without.

It was purchased from toyota, using the vin number for the prado so I assume it was the correct assembly?

is the abs sensor on the cv or in the wheel bearing?

did you damage the teeth when removing the hub ?

i just purchased new wheel bearings & the same part number did both

It should throw a code for either left or right sensor. Swap the sensors left to right and re-check to see if you problem has moved (code has changed and is now for the other side electrical) or stayed in the same place (therefore mechanical).

When I dissassembled to check yesterday it looks like the abs sensors runs off the bearing assembly.

I cant see any teeth on the hub or cv end and dont recall anything on the old bearing assembly either.

I will look for the invoice to see what the part numbers were.

Its not throwing a code unless I unplug either of the abs sensors, if I reset the DTC and drive the car the car just thinks that the wheels are turning at different speeds and then the slip indicator lights up.

The abs sensors cant be swapped around they are either left or right.

If you have a look at the pictures in this guide you will see where the abs sensor etc sits, mine is identical.

Like raydes said there are 2 types of wheel bearing 1 with and 1 without abs sensors they are different on the back , no codes will be thrown as the sensor itself isn't faulting , but the tcs system is seeing no rotation from the front wheels

trying to find a way to read the output of the individual abs sensors so I can see if the front senors are actually picking up anything from the bearing assembly. Anyone know of a way? I am looking through the workshop manual now.

2 ways of checking the sensors, if you have access to somebody with an oscilloscope its an easy check to check the signal , the other way is with a scan tool , depending on the sort of sensor typical resistance is 60-70 ohms

thanks everyone, will contact the toyota dealer who supplied me with the wheel bearings and see what they say.......... I am baffled how they can mix this up, they used my vin number to check!
