  • Pedal hits the floor

    Just to let people know.
as the army is now buying Prado's, there was one last week that had a bit of problems with its brakes,
Driving a long at 110k/h cruise control on, the driver wanted to slow down so touched the brake pedal, and it hit the floor, without slowing the vehicle down.
Driver managed to use the handbrake and got safely off the road. so no damage to driver or vehicle, so prado is currently in at toyota for inspections.
Will update if and when I hear more
currently own 77 FJ40 hardtop (head rebuilt, fuel pump about to be replaced) nearly back on the road,
Dune coloured D4D (aka Sandy) in the driveway, lots and lots of goodies to be added

      Odd.

They would run a fail safe dual circuit, so that kind of rules out a brake line or pressure fail?
Perhaps the pin fell out of the brake pedal to Master cylinder push rod?? This would cause the pedal to hit floor possibly.

Do we know the results yet? As to why the pedal went to the floor.
It wasnt operator error was it?

        Cheers

Easy fixed, either raise the pedal or cut hole in floor and get more pedal travel

The final verdict is, that toyota couldnt find a fault after hydraulic, electronics and onroad tests, and it has been classified as a once off problem and the vehicle has been put back into service.

Here is the latest on this event. Names taken out to protect the innocent.

Subject: The latest on the failing Prado brakes

                A. ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY REGIMENT REPORT NUMBER AUR 01/08 DATED 22 APR
                2008
                B. TRAMM VOLUME 2, SECTION 1, CHAPTER 5
                C. TMP 2008/024 DATED 21 MAY 2008
                1. FOR YOUR UNIT CONTACT
                2. REF A REPORTED FAULT WITH THE VEHICLE BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH WAS
REPORTED TO HAVE FAILED AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL
ENGAGED. THE DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND THE
PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. ATTEMPTS TO PUMP THE PEDAL FAILED TO
ACTIVATE THE BRAKE. THE DRIVER APPLIED THE VEHICLE PARK BRAKE TO SLOW
THE VEHICLE AND BRING IT TO A STOP.

                3. DIRECT ALL ENQUIRIES TO DMO LAND VEHICLE SPO (COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
                INVESTIGATING OFFICER

                4. REF A HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH REF B BY THE
VEHICLE OEM, TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION AUSTRALIA (TMCA) IN CONJUNCTION
WITH THEIR AUTHORISED DEALER (NORTHPOINT TOYOTA). REF C PROVIDES
DETAILS OF THE VEHICLE INSPECTION AND FINDINGS, WITH TMCA ADVISING
THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS EXTENSIVELY INSPECTED AND TESTED
MECHANICALLY, HYDRAULICALLY AND ELECTRICALLY INCLUDING ON ROAD
TESTING. BRAKES PERFORMED NORMALLY, WITH THE REPORTED CONDITION
UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED. TOYOTA HAVE ADVISED THAT THE TOYOTA PRADO
BRAKE SYSTEM DESIGN INCORPORATES A DIAGONALLY SPLIT HYDRAULIC BRAKING
SYSTEM; IN THE EVENT THAT ONE CIRCUIT SHOULD FAIL THE REMAINING
CIRCUIT WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT BRAKING TO STOP THE
VEHICLE, ALBEIT WITH A LONGER BRAKE PEDAL STROKE. TOYOTA ADVISE THAT
FOR THE CLAIMED CONDITION TO HAVE OCCURRED, SIMULTANEOUS MULTIPLE
FAILURES OF TWO SEPARATE AND ISOLATED BRAKING CIRCUITS WOULD NEED TO
HAVE OCCURRED, WHICH IS HIGHLY IMPROBABLE. TOYOTA HAVE HAD NO OTHER
REPORTS OF A SIMILAR CONDITION OCCURRING ON THIS MODEL.

                5. IN LIGHT OF THE FINDINGS FROM TOYOTA, LAND VEHICLE SPO CONSIDERS
THIS TO BE AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. THE SUBJECT VEHICLE (ARN A08195) IS
TO BE RELEASED FROM QUARANTINE AND RETURNED TO THE LOAN POOL. ALL
UNITS OPERATING THE LANDCRUISER PRADO ARE ENCOURAGED TO ENSURE THAT
THE COMPLIMENTARY FIRST SERVICE OFFERED BY TOYOTA IS CARRIED OUT BY
                THEIR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER.

We have an early 100 series cruiser at work (our work truck). It has had the pedal go to the floor twice or 3 times, over the years, each time toyota find no fault. It hasn't happened to me personally but I have had the ABS fail, coming down a steep wet bitumen hill. Lightly applied the brakes and the fronts just locked up, no pulsing pedal nothing. Automatically assumed no ABS, so reapplied brakes and needed to stop quickly now due to brake failure, so I kept squeesing, and you guessed it the pedal started to ABS pulse. Tried to recreate the prob, but work fine from then on!!! I beleive the ABS caused the skid as I didn't feel I had anywhere near enough pressure to lock the brakes as quickly as they did.

Is this only happening on autos or manuals too?

                      Hi all

Coming down the Toowooomba range today (1:10 for 4 km  ) I locked the 5 speed auto back to 3rd for engine braking as I had my 2.5 tonne caravan trying to get up my exhaust pipe :? . A few little applications of the brake were all I needed to maintain about 50km/hr. I then came up behind a semi doing about 5km/hr but couldn't change lanes straight away so I had to lean on the brakes fairly hard. They certainly did the job but the pedal was not exactly rock hard with good feel. It was a little disconcerting for a moment .
I know that these vehicles come with something called EBD and, when I asked the saleman on purchase what this did, he said "If a little old lady needs to do a panic stop and isn't strong enough, the brakes will apply themselves". I really don't like computers deciding what is best for me but would I have experienced EBD?
Anyone got any ideas? (Apart from the fact that Toyota changed my brake fluid recently :? ).

                      Cheers - John

You are thinking of BA (Brake Assist) which increases pedal force in an emergancy stop.

EBD (Electronic brake force distribution) is an electronic version of the conventional load sensing proportioning valve. (The more load the more rear brake bias)

See here for a better explaination than mine... straight from Toyota themselves:

                          Re: Pedal hits the floor

I have had a similar problem lucky enough we were just pulling out of the driveway. Tried to pump up the pedal but no luck. I thought it might just need a bleed, but when I looked at the resevoir it was empy. The rear seal on the master cylinder had failed and filled up the booster with fluid, I think it may have been due to someone using Dot 4 brake fluid previously, only Dot 4 should be used on Toyota's.

I would definitely not be buying a 2nd hand Prado from Adel Uni Regiment !!!
