  • Brake RECALL 2006.

There has been a "recall" on certain model Prado's.
Only found out through forum groups !! as no notice from toyota received.
Appears to be from 2003 onwards.
Ring 1800 643 242 and check if yours is one of the faulty units.
You need to supply your VIN number as they won't tell you the affected numbers first !
Appears that brake fluid changed during servicing can cause one of the seals in booster to fail and leak into chamber.

Just checked my '04 petrol. No recall notice on it

The girl told me there had been three in total on the 120

    Crankshaft
    Rear axles and seals
    Brake master cylinder

While were at it, any experience with paint rub on the rear door?
Im about to ring my local dealer to make a claim.....I think ki will need more than good luck

    Regards

      Hi guys,

Just visited my local dealer to check out the brake recall notice. The recall was issued on the 7th of July 2006. I haven't received a letter yet.

Apparently, the problem is in the seals on the master cylinder, as stated previously. However, they don't know which vehicles are affected until they pull the master cylinder out.

According to the service department, they book your vehicle in and pull they master cylinder out, if its ok, they put a new o-ring on it and put it back. If the seals are suspect, they put a new seal kit in it before re-assembling the cylinder. If your lucky, and don't need new seals, you get the vehicle back that day, if not, you get it back the next day!

Put it in today for brake check, rang 2 hours later to be told to come and pick up another car.
Parts to be obtained and new booster to be fitted...
Takes approx 3 days to get part and fit.
Apparently the odds of failures are up from 1 in 10 TO 1 in 6.

Drove home in a near new (6months old) RAV4 top of the range.
Great sales ploy as I will probably buy one of these for the wife now...

Picked up, all replaced, no scratches or fluid damage, and service dept. great to deal with.

I had mine done this week with the 35k service. The dealer told me they replaced a seal but not the whole master cylinder. I was told to expect to lose the car overnight if the whole unit had to be replaced.

I ordered a "courtesy car" at a cost of $38.50 for the day (new Corolla demonstrator), because I had to go to physio. They told me that if it was necessary to keep the prado there would be no additional charge for the time I kept the courtesy car.

Perhaps it's my imagination but since I got the prado back the pedal feels firmer, and the brakes more effective. I would not have noticed any difference otherwise...

I do not know what Strachan referred to about the brake pedal feeling better however hopefully my problem may be related and should not be under a seperate post....

I took my car in for a 20k service (Feb 2007 D4D GXL) and asked them to look at why the brake pedal goes down slowly to the floor when pushed "very" hard for a period of time.

I noticed this when doing some 4WDing down some steep rocky slopes a few weeks ago. A mate drove my car for a short time yesterday and without me telling him anything, he soon mentioned there's a problem with the brake pedal sinking down.

It's an uncomfortable as it feels like you are about to push your foot through the floor.

Picked up the car and they go through my list and tell me they bled the brakes and got rid of the air. Didn't take long after I headed down the road to find the same problem. Back at work I tried my bosses Grande (March 07) and his brakes are what I expect. There is some movement but ot that much.

I hopped back in mine and without the engine started they feel fine. Hold my foot hard on the brake and turn on the engine and it starts to head towards the floor fairly quickly :?:

Anyone else have a similar problem if they try this or give me some leads of the cause. I will be taking it back however want to ensure I have some validations from others.
                    Cheers

Wow sounds like a strange one there Pete. I wish I had a 120 to try it out for you.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

You will find that this is possibly normal. But in saying this I can only comment on what you say is happening due to the fact I can't physically test it myself. Being a Master Tech for Toyota I can tell you that the brake boosters that are fitted in most Toyota's have a DOUBLE diaphragm that give you that pedal sinking to the floor feeling. Do your brakes pull the vehicle up normally with a good pedal feel? In saying all this I would still suggest to have someone physically road test your vehicle. Hope this helps somewhat. :!:

Thanks for the informative reply toytech. Brakes work ok normally. I tried another Prado at the service centre and it did the same thing, in fact slightly worse than mine.

I'm interested to hear from the others if theirs is the same. When 4WDing and on the odd occasion you need that constant hard brake pressure downhilling slowly over those BIG rocks it really shows up.

I now accept it is standard to be like this. Just seemed VERY strange initially when it occured.

                              HI All,
seems there may still be some 120s out there that have slipped throught the loop.
I have a 2005 GXL TD and took her in for the 110K km service this morning.
The service dept said my car hadnt been done yet and that they would do it with the service.
GUess it shows that we shouldnt assume that these things are always recalled and that we really need to check up on them ourselves (not that we should have to)
