  • Seized brake piston

    All,

Just some info for those not aware. I removed all my discs and hand them skimmed today. Fitted new Bendix 4wd pads and bled brakes. Had an issue with the front lhs caliper seizing up and causing brake drag and heat in the rotor. Once I stripped the caliper I found the lower outer brake piston seized up.

The new thicker pads obviously made the issue worse and more noticable. Found rust and shit in the piston bore in the small space between the outside of the bore and the inner piston seal. Sorted it with emery and assembled/bled the brake.

Seems fine now. Might be worth checking when servicing your truck next.

Guess it's nothing a year in the tropics, won't fix !

    Re: Seized brake piston

if people need to clean the caliper bore.
it would be best to use wet/dry or fine emery paper.
the scuff marks are more likely to rust if the polished like surface to scored.
alternatively, buy a brake caliper bore hone. maybe $20, and just put in your drill on slow and job done.
rebuilding calipers is not done much these days.
alot of manufacturers recommend not to. maybe the bore coating is removed and causes problems,
or maybe they want more $$$.
a little care and this job can be done quickly.
use a new piston seal. the seal maybe scored with debre as the piston is removed.

      Re: Seized brake piston/CALIPER SETS

      HI ALL

JUST A QUICK POST REGARDING CALIPER SETS AND HOW LONG THEY NORMALLY LAST??

I HAVE A 2004 GLX AUTO AND HAVE NEEDED A FULL CALIPER KIT TWICE NOW AND I HAVE ONLY DONE 140,000KM. I LIVE IN FNQ SO 85% OF MY DRIVING IS OUT OF TRAFFIC AND ON BITUMEN ROAD. I WAS GETTING BAD BRAKE DUST AROUND THE 60,000KM MARK AND TOYOTA ADVISED ME TO GET THE PADS AND CALIPER AND PISTONS REPLACED ($550), SO I DID. cOME 140,000KM AND WITH NO WARNING APART FROM THE BRAKE DUST THAT NEVER SEEMS TO GO AWAY AND BRAKES ALWAYS RAN HOT, I WENT FROM NORMAL DRIVING TO THE PASD WEARING ON THE DISC! I AM ONLY NEW TO ALL THIS BUT TO ME THIS JUST DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT!

I WAS THINKING OF WRITTING TO TOYOTA AUSTRALIA ABOUT THIS WHAT DO U GUYS THINK!

the use of capital letters is considered to be yelling.

if toyota had done the job correctly, i wouldn't see how this would re-occur so soon.
i'm thinking it was done at all, or if it was, it wasn't done correctly.

thanks sorry didn't realise the caps was such a big deal.

But thanks for the replies, turns out they are going to check the pressures and make sure they are the same on the left and right hand sides

              Re: Seized brake piston

Just some more good results after sorting this brake issue. Fuel burn around town has dropped 2.5 liters per hundred kms.

well Max, when you show you currently use 80.2 lts/100kms, thats not much, but every drop helps.

                  Hi y-all

Have the exact same issue as described with the lower piston on the front lhs caliper seized solid I figured it was due to salt water exposure and the generally soggy climate of Ireland, very interesting to hear it happening elsewhere, calipers are easy to come by and re-con parts are readily available so I might suspect its quite a widespread illness?

piston seizure is apparently a common problem with prados , especially ones that enter water . 2 days before i left for the cape i found 3 seized pistons in my front calipers and had them rebuilt. if you have traction control this will affect it . i have had very little brake dust since the rebuild and new toyota pads . the brake specialist used a different seal on the pistons that now has a metal band around it . he informed me that it was a common problem with prados .

yeah the brake pistons are shit on prado's and cruiser's mine ####ed out on the front so i bought 4 new pistons. its pretty easy to rebuild them took me a afternoon to pull them out (4 pistons were stuck in) wet and dry sand the ones that where not pitted. then reseal them and fit with new pads. if you dont replace the pitted one's your wasting your time doing the seals as they will just leak and its your brakes dont be a tight arse with them as they make you stop!

The calipers on the prado 120 I think I am right in saying are very similar to the prado 95 did the 95 suffer in a similar manner?

I've been having problems with my brakes for a while now (2003 model) and found three of four pistons in the passenger side calliper had seized.

I watched this video of a dismantle to see how I might approach removing the pistons:

                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFgoJDU0LR8

But my calliper pistons are completely seized and refuse to budge with the multi-grips. Any ideas how I can get these pistons out of the callipers?

Hook the brake line back up, start the car and pump the brakes..

Ensure you trust the person on the brake pedal, have a good line of communication and wear safety glasses.

                            Have fun !

Thanks Matt. I can get one out using the brake system then I push it back in with a clamp and another one will come out but the original piston gets stuck again. There's only one piston I can push back in with my fingers - the other three just keep getting stuck. I think I'll take the calliper into a brake specialist and see if they've got any gear that makes this job less painful.
