  • i finally got around to fitting up my auto locker.
picked it up for $100 out of an early hilux (45mm carrier. prado 50mm).
got 2 bushes made to suit the prado bearings and hilux hemisphere ($40).
fitted up with new carrier bearings ($80).
    took about 3hrs in/out.
wow. awesome. very impressed with the lack of clicking noise.
i went for a drive on the roads the check out any clicking.
accelerating around a roundabout and nothing.
decelerating into the roundabout (curving road entry) and heard with the window down the faint clicking.
off-road it has much better traction/drive. lifting wheels no longer stops momentum.
it's hard the tell if it's working/not working as it just climbs everything without delays.
if i needed a locker in another AWD vehicle, i would without a doubt be fitting an auto-locker.
so if your budget doesn't stretch for a air/electric locker, don't worry. in your prado an auto locker is just as good and alot less $$$.

      • Last I spoke with them Braddo, the lokka isn't suitable for a manual due to the backlash of/to the gearbox.. This wasn't a problem for the auto trans for what reasons, I'm not entirely sure. Probably best to call them and discuss - speak to Tom.

Thanks switched- I emailed them today.

Looks like I'll probably just have to keep saving for an air locker!

That could mean they aren't much good in terms of preventing shock loading on the crown wheel and pinion gear, which a major cause of diff failure in Prados. I will be interested to see how it pans out for Lokka customers who drive their Prados hard.

              • I pulled out of a shopping centre car park on the weekend (turning right) and got a bit of a squeal from one of the tyres which I thought was odd at the time - I didn't exactly floor it and it's never happened before. Since then I've noticed that the Lokka has stopped 'ticking' when I turn right (still ticks when turning left). I rang 4WD Systems but the guy I spoke to just said not to worry about it as the spacing was probably slightly different between the two sides??? I got the impression he didn't know what he was talking about - he took my number, be interesting to see if they call me back.

I just checked and its been fitted just over six months now.

                • Maybe time to jack it up and see how it goes-
Let me guess, 6 month warranty?

Yes, and no - 3 year unconditional warranty but I suspect that's not the point. It's the cost of getting someone to open it up to look, then off the road until fixed

                    • Does it click if you turn the other way? Maybe get it off road with
A wheel in the air and see if it still does the job

                      • I've tried forwards and backwards left and right turns on bitumen. It clicks forward and back turning left but not at all turning right.

I guess I need to jack it up and see what's happening then.

                        • Trek,
Was your clearance between the spacer and spider on the LHS and RHS similar? The installer should have let you know what they were.

No idea, I gave them all the documentation when they fitted it and I pointed out where they needed to fill in the clearance but they gave it back not filled in
