      Thanks Amts, I didn't have that but I have just changed the Message Editor Interface in settings to 'Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls' - it was set to 'Basic Editor - A simple text box'. All good now

        OK, back on topic. What diff oil should be used once the Lokka is fitted and no longer an LSD? I noticed on my 120K service yesterday that Toyota used Multi-Trax 75W-90 Transax oil both front and rear - I thought the rear used a different oil to the front?

          Was the oil Toyota used an LSD oil? If so, there's no harm using it on the front too. LSD oil is ony a couple of bucks more than non-LSD oil. I remember MickL saying to use the same LSD oil which will reduce the number of bottles in the garage. I assume that a diff with a lokka in it would still use the same oil. Best to ask an expert.

            You can use LSD oil in a standard diff (open or locked) but not a standard oil in an LSD. The reason being the friction modifers that manufacturers add to all modern oils. The type and amount of friction modifiers added to LSD oils won't negatively effect the clutch pack in an LSD diff, the same can't be said for non LSD oils.

              I seem to recall that Locker style diffs just use a standard mineral gear oil. No friction modifiers are necessary but the supplier / OEM are the ones to ask.

                This thread has obviously roused a lot of interest, having had a 4wd systems locker in a previous car they are a good product, they can't be used in the front of a full time 4wd as they make the steering very heavy and unless you adjust your driving style things like cv's will start to fail (break). They work well in the rear but again you have to adjust your driving style, the best way to corner on bitumen is to "feather" the throttle, this takes the strain off the locker it will disengage and act like a diff. I you are on throttle or full of there will be strain between the inner and outer wheels, which is the principle on how the locker works, the result is your tyres start to scrub out and the car will also try to push straight forward, not turn which could be a bad thing. One last thing, I don't see why there should be any difference between using one in a manual or auto. It is still performing the same function.

                Also I found standard diff oil worked fine.

                Anyway, that is my bit of noise, hope it helps

                    it might take you all day, but thats half the fun. learning and modifying your own ride.
                    this would be a reasonably easy task, if you take your time

                      Normally I'd agree with you but time is rather limited for me at the moment. Haven't decided which way to go yet, going to get the quote first and then see - I can certainly think of better ways of spending my money.

                      Also, doing this on my own I'm concerned I may end up needing something and having no transport.

                      I want to get it fitted by 10th July (next 4WD trip).

                        Thats always my biggest concern too when doing something like that for the first time.
                        Would be a major hassle if I needed something I didnt have to finish the job.

                        Try and get someone to help you if you can. Even for the transport emergency if needed.
                        Just think of the rewarding warm fuzzy feeling youll get by doing it yourself...............oh, and not to mention, smelling of hypoid for the next week to help remind you of a job well done

                            Thats a bit outragous!
                            Tom, the guy you bought it from said he normall fits for $375 including everything, gaskets and oil etc.

                            Another bloke here in Sydney he recommended is about the same.

                            Have you got anyone else to quote you where you are?
                            Maybe Tom can recommend someone near you?
